Ben Sommer's Foray into Cover Songs
There comes a point in every musicians life where they must decide is money and semi-fame more important than artistic integrity. An original band in a state like Delaware, isn't going to make much money. The state is full of rednecks, white trash, and chin-strappers and those groups don't give a shit about new original music. They want to fist pump and cheat on their wives by rubbing up against some hefty chick with Delaware Eyes TM to the dulcimer tunes of Mr. Greenpants covering Green Day's latest opus.
Enter Ben Sommer. He has carved a niche out online (about 35 people know he exists because of the internet). But the rock n' roll community has about a billion people and the world has about 6.5 billion. That's a lot of people who don't know Ben exists. What's an aging bald rocker to do? SELL-OUT!
Ben has decided to garner more attention to his actual music, he's going to cover popular songs by bands inferior to his own skills. Here is his cover of Foster the People's Pumped Up Kicks.
But since posting that video a new challenger emerged. The Black Keys became one of the most popular bands thanks to the inclusion on the Twilight soundtracks and some car commercial jingles. Not content on selling out just once, Ben Sommer reached for his guitar to predict the next single off El Camino. He chose Sister and only time will tell if he chose the next single correctly. Here is Ben's cover of The Black Keys song Sister.
