Aerosmith: The Ultimate Illustrated History ... Review

When writing a book, one of the easiest books to write is an autobiography on a particular living person. You visit with them and have them recount their earliest memories and write the book from the third person perspective. You mix in a bit of the background on the times and Ta-Da autobiography. However, one of the hardest to write is an autobiography using quotes collected from various sources. That is what Richard Bienstock did when he penned Aerosmith: The Ultimate Illustrated History of the Boston Bad Boys published by Voyageur Press.

Rich told the story of Aerosmith by weaving in various quotes from the band members collected across old magazine articles, books, and stories from Aerosmith's career. You might have the perfect segue to another part of your narrative, but can't find the correct quote. I can see, in every detail of this book, that this was a labor of love for Rich.

His writing alone is able to place the reader back in that Sunapee Harbor ice cream parlor where Steven Tyler and Joe Perry first met. Rich is able to paint the correct atmosphere for a specific time in Aerosmith's career.

But if this were a regular book, I'd have put it down a long time ago and never finished it. Reading hurts my head, as evidenced by the lack of proof reading on this site. I just don't have the patience to sit down and read a full autobiography, even of people and icons I am a fan of. But that's why Aerosmith: The Ultimate Illustrated History of the Boston Bad Boys is perfect for me - it uses vivid pictures to tell the story.

You have heard it a bunch of times, "A picture is worth a thousand words." Rather than Rich writing a bunch of information about the 70s style and attitude, he used appropriately placed images that augment the story of Aerosmith. This book is worth it's price just for the lush pictures contained inside. There are great stage shots, candid backstage photos, ticket stubs (which I love seeing how the price compared to today), concert posters, and so much more. I didn't even read the book the first night I got it. I just slowly turned the pages and studied the pictures of America's best band.

If you are a fan of Aerosmith, you need this book. If you have ADD and want to learn about Aerosmith's backstory, you need this book. If you are historian of fashion, you need this book. What I am saying here is that, this book would look great on your coffee table when you bring that fat chick home from the bar. It's a great conversation piece before you take her to bed and completely disappoint her with your flaccid member. "Oh sorry baby I drank too much whiskey."
