Puddle of Mudd Ready New Album for August 30th Release
Puddle of Mudd is releasing a cover songs album. I nominated their cover of The Rolling Stones classic, Gimme Shelter as one of the worst cover songs ever. You can read about that here.
I have been a fan of this band and I realize they aren't great. But I like their carefree attitude, ear for hooks, and Wes Scantlin's throwback Cobain vocals. I have every album they have released and I am not ashamed to admit it. But this album seems like a colossal miss.
Puddle of Mudd then announced that they were going to cover the AC/DC song T.N.T. They did a pretty rocking take on the AC/DC classic, but it wasn't needed. This band has great songs that they wrote. PLAY THEM! They also covered Nirvana's Breed. I know it is fun to cover other artists, but I didn't pay to see a cover band. I paid to see Puddle of Mudd play their songs. Out of 12 songs, three of them were covers. Why?
"Our goal in interpreting these songs was to pay more tribute rather than reinvent," Phillips added. "These are all classics that are perfect in every sense, so who are we to mess with that? We just wanted to represent them in their true form and add a little of our sound to them. We cut everything with very few takes and tried to keep it very live like those old seventies records. We didn't want to Pro Tool the hell out of it."

I saw Puddle of Mudd live and heard them do some of these covers live. My review stated:

I guess that short headlining tour gave them the idea to release an album of those covers. Here is the tracklisting:
01. Gimme Shelter (The Rolling Stones)
02. Old Man (Neil Young)
03. T.N.T. (AC/DC)
04. Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around (Stevie Nicks/Tom Petty)
05. The Joker (Steve Miller Band)
06. Everybody Wants You (Billy Squier)
07. Rocket Man (Elton John)
08. All Right Now (Free)
09. Shooting Star (Bad Company)
10. D’yer Maker (Led Zeppelin)
11. Funk #49 (The James Gang)
That's an interesting tracklisting with a few songs not necessarily seen as covers. I'll let you know how it is since I'll probably be the only poor sap in line on August 30th.
When asked about the covers, Puddle of Mudd had this to say:
"Our goal in interpreting these songs was to pay more tribute rather than reinvent," Phillips added. "These are all classics that are perfect in every sense, so who are we to mess with that? I respect that, but it still doesn't explain why Gimme Shelter is so nauseatingly bad. Give it a listen.
