Michael Jackson's Influence on My Life?

When I was six months old, Michael Jackson's Thriller was released. The album is one of the best albums ever created crossing many genres and appealing to a wide array of audiences and tastes.

I remember dancing around to the songs on that album and practicing my best Michael Jackson moves on the kitchen laminate. But it wasn't until I was about 12 years old did the influence of Michael Jackson's Thriller really hit home. I was watching a little known music channel called The Box. The channel was essentially a Jukebox located in the upper reaches of cable. Day or night, you could call in and request videos for like $1.99. I used to sit there and wait for Michael Jackson's Beat It to come on so I could mimic the fight sequence naked in my room.

If you are not familiar with the Beat It video, Jackson had to finance the video himself because he wanted to use real life Crips and Blood gang members, which CBS refused to pay for. The idea for the video is that Jackson hates the senseless violence caused by the fighting of these two gangs. He dances his way through locations of previous gang fights to the location of a large scale fight. When he arrives, there is a knife fight between two gang leaders. Jackson breaks up the fight and a large scale choreographed routine breaks out. It was transformative for my horned up self.

The Box Music Channel had some great discoveries that a young Craig Wettner used to discover more about himself using Van Halen's Hot for Teacher, David Lee Roth's California Girls, and Aqua's Barbie Girl. While most of your Saturday nights were spent kissing girls, playing music, or hanging out with friends, I was in my room masturbating to music videos while learning more about music theory, history, and edging.

But it wasn't until the Beat It video came on that my naked gymnastics took flight. I used to reanact the video naked, pretending my penis was the knife used by the rival gang leaders. Thrusting and stabbing the air with my white, circumsized head "HA! OH! HA!" could be heard over the Eddie Van Halen guitar solo (who couldn't appear in the video because he was on a rival label). I also loved the dance sequence where Jackson and company toss their hands out of the side as if they are throwing dice. Holding onto my shaft and pulling off that move was glorious. I would sleep so well after seeing that video and if I was a bit more rebellious, I'd no doubt have smoked a cigarette.

It wasn't until Catholic grade school that I got to reanact my Michael Jackson self-discovery with someone else. I found a priest that loved Jackson as much as I did. He tied our wrists together and we pretended to be the rival gang leaders from the Beat It video. The "winner" of the fight was the person who climaxed on the other....not in the gay way, in the way that was totally AWESOME! He had a red leather jacket that I was always envious of, but came all over it. Take that Father!

What is the point of this post? It is because I just realized that the video was released exactly one year after I was born. That can't be a coincidence. Marvel in the masterpiece that is Michael Jackson's Beat It.
