Green Day Crowned Kings of Punk

In a sure sign of the Apocalypse, or that Rolling Stone.com visitors are morons, Green Day has been crowed "Kings of Punk" in an online poll. I would link to the poll, but I suspect it was rigged to create pageviews.

You are thinking, as I was, well the poll probably was biased not having any punk bands in it and Green Day was the only logical choice, though I'd argue with you no matter what. The poll contained the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Clash, The Dead Kennedys, The Misfits, Bad Brains, and Black Flag. All, and I do mean ALL of those bands I listed are more punk than Green Day ever was.

Green Day has turned into a good rock band and made a conscience effort to move away from punk a long time ago. The other bands remained punk through and through and certainly never had a "punk" musical.

Punk is an attitude, a state of mind, a lifestyle, a style of dress. I think Johnny Rotten would punch the person in the face if they suggested a punk musical to him. The Ramones started as a Fuck You to the bloated prog rock scene before them. They wanted shorter albums with no theme that sounded like it was recorded in a basement for $4.00.

I believe the bands would be happy for Green Day and certainly respect what they have achieved, but would disagree with you vehemently if you called Green Day punk.

However, I suspect this online poll was trolled by only the best trollers. I would guess part of the Tea Party movement sat in their underwear sipping tea and crumpets voting for Green Day
