There are some girls in rock with a lot of talent and the attitude to make it work. Take for instance, my girl in Diemonds Priya. That girl will kick your ass in high heels and out drink ya too. She has the real rock n' roll attitude and it comes naturally. It isn't forced or faked at all.

But there are other girls in rock that are more there for the novelty effect than anything else. For every legitmate female rock front woman (Joan Jett) there is a Haley Williams of Paramore, Juliette Lewis, or Amy Lee. You get the legitimate feeling that the music they are making wouldn't even be heard by the masses if they weren't attractive.

I wrote an article about female DJs and how they try way to hard (link). The same can be said about women in Rock n' Roll. I get it, it isn't easy breaking through in a male dominated industry that is full of sexism and harassment. You have to develop a persona to almost get through the shows because drunk guys are assholes.

However, I think a lot of people over look the sheer musicality for the novelty of having a female lead. Take for instance a local cover band Kristen and the Noise. They are your average, run of the mill, cover band here in the cover band dominated musical landscape of Delaware. There are other male fronted cover bands who are better than Kristen and her Noise, but the effect of having a female sing your favorites isn't lost on the audience. I can't fault Kristen and her band, I fault the fans for overlooking talent to stare at Kristen.

I should start a band of strippers and ghost write the music for them. It would probably look hotter than Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love video because strippers are more comfortable getting naked than models. Unfortunately, strippers don't have any other talents besides sucking beach balls through beer funnels and swinging around brass poles. I'd have to start at square one teaching them scales and bars and they don't have the attention span for that.
