Gary Cherone Takes Hurtsmile on the Road

Gary Cherone is a polarizing figure because he lead Van Cherone at it's worst. Eddie was nearly dead with tongue cancer, Michael Anthony was phoning it in, and Alex Van Halen was off with Jane Goodell in the African jungle.

But I don't blame Cherone for this and I don't believe he deserves the scathing loathing he receives. He has a new band called Hurtsmile that is an interesting rock band. I can't really get into them as I see them almost as a rip off of Sammy Hagar's Waboritas. See video below for Hurtsmile's sound.

Gary is taking Hurtsmile on the road and in Tucson, Arizona will be opening up for Sammy Hagar and the Waboritas. You can get a full itinerary on Hurtsmile's website.

If you are a fan of Gary and you live in Newark (tickets here), you can actually have dinner with him at the Dairy Queen for 100 bucks. Then you can update your Twitter with a Twitpic of Gary eating a peanut butter Blizzard....that's it I am off to get a Blizzard.

I really feel for Gary Cherone. He was a last minute replacement that never really gelled with the rest of the band. I dodn't think it was really his fault though. EVH was sick (and messed up on drugs according to Hagar's book), Michael Anthony was slowly being cut out of the band (hence his phoning it in), and Alex was just in it for the money and didn't care either way. Here's the new guy replacing Hagar with a band full of half-hearted musicians (at best) and it's no wonder the album didn't work. Then the tour that was panned (largly because of EVH's lack of enthusiasm) and Cherone never had a chance.

I recently dusted off my copy of VHIII and I don't think it's a bad album at all. It's no 1984 or 5150 to be sure, but it was a fresh attempt at the band. It's say it's as good as Balance (which isn't saying much I know). VHIII is nowhere as bad as people say it is.
