Big Four Show Coming to Yankee Stadium
You asked for it and you got it! It is an East Coast date for the Big Four of Thrash show at Yankee Stadium. Here is the bad news, Metallica believes you don't work as the show is on a Wednesday, September 14.
You read that correctly, a show discussed and advertised as a destination show is asking you to travel on Wednesday to NYC. Assuming the show will end around 11 and you don't live in NYC, you will have to travel back to your domicile after 11pm probably forcing you to take off work on Thursday as well.
I just don't understand this decision and why there isn't a weekend show at Yankee stadium or even the New Meadowlands. Let's explore some reasons why.
Let's assume the date should be sometime in September. Slayer is done touring with Rob Zombie on August 6th. No schedule conflicts there. Megadeth is touring with Disturbed until August 14th. No conflict there. Anthrax is doing off and on festival dates with the last one on July 23 with Megadeth. Metallica has a festival date on July 16th and then another festival date on September 25 in Brazil.
Ok that leaves from August 15-September 17th as possible dates for the show. Let's assume they want it at Yankee stadium, which poses the biggest scheduling problem as it is still baseball season. August 15 through August 22nd the Yankees are out of town and if it takes a week to erect the stage could play on August 19 and 20 with zero problems.
Hell the week they decided to play it the Yankees are still away on the weekend of September 16-17. Football doesn't start until September 11th or so so all of August would be available for the show at New Meadowlands.
I know there are a lot of details that have to be worked out when an event of this magnitude is scheduled, but it just seems they really don't give a shit about working professionals who, in a tough economy, won't have the ability to take off work and spend 77 bucks and up for a stadium show. I think it's callous and an egregious oversight for a band who built it's empire on the backs of the blue collar workers.
That being said, that isn't the reason I am not going to the show. I refuse to support this show because of the omission of Exodus, one of five founding members of thrash. Just because they didn't sell a shit load of albums, just because their members haven't been on VH1, just because they have a tougher career than the other four bands, is no reason to shun them and deny their importance in the annals of rock n' roll history. Rock n' Roll is sometimes written by those who sell the most records and make the most money, but that's not what it should be. A highly influential band as Exodus was, should not be left off a tour touting itself the Big ___ of Thrash.
Lars Wettner doesn't agree with my decision to sit this show out on principle, but if we all did more of that Metallica would start listening to their fans and not doing whatever the fuck they want like putting out a semen and blood tapestry with generic pop rock turdapiece like Fuel, and scheduling giant stadium shows for the middle of the week.
If this show was on a weekend where my friends could make a weekend in NYC out of this, it would make me rethink my principles and how they rank out of having an awesome time. But on a Wednesday, with 40-70k smelly thrash fans and no Exodus makes this an easy decision.
Great use of the Fender strat since none of the bands use that type of guitar. Nice research, random marketing person.
