Band Names Are Important

You mom always said "Put the dick down and read a book, but don't judge that book by the cover." That may not have been her exact words, but that didn't make the statement any less true for some of you. Don't judge a book by it's cover. Sound advice by Mommy dearest that we can apply to bands - don't judge a band by it's name. The problem is we do that unconsciously all the time.

If you don't choose wisely early on in the band's development, you will be roped and lumped into a certain genre or group. If for instance, your band name is Gorgoroth Slayer of Pussy and Men, you can't put out a heartfelt  ballad about sipping champagne in the French Riveria. If your songs don't contain double bass drum, growling guttural moans and wails, and aggressive guitar chords, you'll have no fans or followers.

Contrary to that if you name your band Plain White Tees all you can be is a emo pussy band who uses ukeleles and rose pedals to create faux emotional songs about leaving some stupid broad named Delilah in St. Louis or some idealistic romantic fantasy about "making love all night long till the morning dawn." You can't release an uptempo punk anthem about fisting a woman behind the Iron Curtain in 1945.

You have to really think of the genre your band will be tossed into solely on your name alone. It is the first thing people notice and reviewers read when the are determining whether or not your band is worth their time. In the digital age, we are getting more information at a faster rate that we have to prioritize and triage information at lightening speed. Do I have time to listen to a band named Peach Tree Garden? Well maybe, but if the email after it reads "Listen to my band Bukkake Fistfight," Bukkake Fistfight gets the square.

What I am trying to say in this random post is that the Plain White Tees suck.
