Soundgarden's Live on I-5 Album Review
Soundgarden has reunited with a tentative plan to tour behind the new live album Live on I-5. The live album collects tracks from various concerts along Highway I-5 along the west coast Del Mar, Seattle, Oakland, smashing them together to create the band's first live album. But while it is great to hear what the band sounded like live, the album leaves a lot to be desired.
Songs like Jesus Christ Pose (recorded in Oakland), a Stooges cover of Search and Destroy (recorded in Seattle), and Rusty Cage (recorded in Vancouver) are stand out tracks on I-5. These tracks capture the band's live ferocity and reckless abandon attitude; Chris' power vocals, and Thal's distorted grunge tinged guitar work.
But the album's transitions from one song to the next are almost sloppy and hastily thrown together. Sure the recording engineer has to mash unlike white crowd noise with another crowd sample recorded at another venue, but sometimes it is abrupt and disjointed. I had an advanced copy and it is possible these transitional kinks could be worked out at a later date, but usually what I get is the final product.
If this was five years ago and the outlook on Soundgarden reuniting was grim, I would probably buy this looking to see what the band produced in a live setting. But now that they are back and planning a few tour dates and already played a couple of sold-out club dates that were filmed and recorded, you might want to wait for those.
In a land of iTunes, you can certainly buy single tracks, so look for album highlights from the following:
Jesus Christ Pose (Oakland) one of the best versions of this song I have ever heard.
Search and Destroy (Seattle)
Rusty Cage (Vancouver)
Noting to Say (Seattle) - Chris' vocals on this song are particularly outstanding.
Shy away from the cover of The Beatles Helter Skelter. It is a slower take on the song that, while interesting, is somewhat boring. I preferred U2's cover of the song better than this one.
