The Dirty Pearls Release New Single
It was a proud moment for us last night. A band we have championed a long time now, finally got their lead single off their upcoming debut album on the radio. It was debuted last night on Rich Russo's Anything Anything on 101.9 WRXP in NYC. Russo has become a Dirty Pearls advocate, but my question to Rich is, why did it take you so long?
We've been fans and friends with Marty since he was the drummer for the now defunct Philadelphia band Union Dead (who I still miss everyday). When talking with Marty in an early interview, he mentioned his new band The Dirty Pearls and how proud he was of the music he was making with the group. We checked them out, but really didn't have much of this site running at the time. When we finally got the site rolling our first real interview was both Marty and Tommy. Read our early interview with Marty and Tommy here.
We were tracking the band and worked closely with them giving away free tickets and promoting events in NYC, Philadelphia, and even Delaware for them. We could track how the band was growing through those contests. Early on, the entries numbered in the single digits with winners being known friends of the band, their photographer Coco Alexander (photography can be seen here) was an early winner. But as the band worked harder and got bigger the contests were double digits and then even triple digits. Now I am afraid to run a free ticket giveaway without setting up a real system to collect names and winners.
The new single is different than anything the Pearls have released before. As a fan from way back I get the unique perspective of knowing the sound of the Pearls B.K or Before Kahne. David Kahne is the Pearls producer and he knows how to craft an album. With Kahne their sound has definitely changed. I can't say how much the sound has changed because I haven't heard all the songs he has worked on, but for this fan he's batting .500. I don't like the changes made to New York City is a Drug. The echo on the vocals is annoying, loud, and very distracting. It ruins what was a perfectly catchy tune without the offset vocal echo. The guitars are also lost in the production of this song. But this post isn't about NYC is a Drug.
The new single is entitled Who's Coming Back to Who, and it is fantastic. The purpose of a single is to ignite excitement and fervor for the album. Since hearing the single last night, I have had an erection lasting longer than four hours. But I can't seek help from a physician: "hey doctor, heard a new single from one of my favorite bands and been erect ever since." His prescription will probably listen to Buckcherry and I am not having any of that bullshit.
I love the production on this song. Nothing is pushed to the back and each part of music, whether it is the rip roaring guitars, the suave vocals, or the pumping rhythm, it all blends and mixes so sublime and smooth. The song begins with an almost 40s style harmonization then explodes into guitars, drums, and bass. The repetitive chorus is so fun to sing along to. I can see elements of the old Pearls I fell in love with (catchy hooks, air-kicking electric guitars, and prancing around in my finest leather to the pounding rhythm) My only gripe is that the balanced production doesn't allow the solos to step forward and let them breathe on their own. That doesn't take away from the song, but juxtaposed by their old style where solos were front and center, it was just a change to get used to.
A wise man once said, it takes years to make an overnight sensation and this could be true of the Dirty Pearls. This single produced by David Kahne will take them to heights the band nor its fans have seen before, yet we always knew they were capable of reaching. I can't wait to hear the new album because it will be like discovering my favorite band for the first time. Until then, go to the band's ReverbNation page and listen to Who's Coming Back to Who.
