Another Lesson in Rock N' Roll Brought to You by Paramore

Fans of Paramore know there is a bitter breakup abound. For those who don't know Paramore, they are a pop band that have been featured in the Rock Band video game, had some songs on the Billboard charts, and at least one album certified Platinum.

Zac Farro (drums) and his brother Josh Farro (guitar) founded the band with Hayley Williams. But recently, they have left the band. The band's official statement on the breakup was this:

For the last year it hasn't seemed as if they wanted to be around anymore. We want Josh and Zac to do something that makes them happy and if that isn't here with us, then we support them finding happiness elsewhere... What truly matters are the good times. The pictures of us with our arms around each other, the long van rides...

But the Farro brothers are telling a different story. According to a blog post by written by Josh, explains how Paramore was started and how the label and management kept members in the dark. This was unacceptable to him and they left. Here is a quote from the entry:

"The band was in the dark the whole time," reads the post. "After many meetings between Hayley, her manager and the labels they decided to sign her to Atlantic records. We didn’t understand why Hayley was the only one signing the contract since we were told this was a 'band', but we were too young to grasp all of this. So far, Zac and I haven’t signed with another label, although I guess our part of Paramore sure could. Next thing we knew we were having a signing party for Hayley."

Getting signed in any capacity is a good thing, in some cases. You have to do what you have to do in order for your music to be heard by the masses. Atlantic probably saw more upside to Hayley than the Farro brothers.

Many bands, like Bon Jovi, were signed through only one member (Jon Bon Jovi was the only member signed). The important part is that you don't want that one signed member to become an egotistical, maniacal, asshole. It would get annoying if the person signed to the label keeps holding that over your head.

There is also a lesson here in having a reasonably attractive woman with some talent front your band. The lesson is, the label treats them different because they can be marketed through modeling, collaborations, and TwitPic'ing pictures of their boobs.

(If you didn't hear, Hayley Williams tweeted a picture of her boobs. You want to see that don't you. Well like Santa, I deliver. Pic is Not Safe for Work. Link)

Remember what happened to No Doubt, Garbage, Evanescence, The Distillers, Flyleaf, Hole, etc? They all had reasonably attractive front women whose band was cropped out of the picture sooner rather than later.

The future of Paramore and the Farro brothers will go only one way:

The label hires someone to write the music parts for Hayley's lyrics and you won't notice a difference with the loss of the Farro brothers. She will continue on, but won't reach the success they had together.

The Farro brothers produce an album that sells ok, but fades into obscurity. A la Tantric.

Reunion happens 5-10 years later when their "fans" are in college and have a few dollars to toss away at seeing them.

Now here is a lesson about what happens when you have an attractive, talented front woman as your mouthpiece courtesy of No Doubt. Paramore, obviously never saw this video.

Amen brotha - man who gives a shit about No Doubt, Grabage, etc. now? Just heard that song again on the radio this weekend. What a great band - Gwen sucks solo. Boob shot looks disturbingly jail-baitish

At least the label was up front with what they wanted. Remember The Bangles? Signed as a band and over time all the attention shifted to Susanna Hoffs and away from the rest of the band. It wasn't all the media's fault there. The label stopped promoting The Bangles and started promoting them as Susanna. Next thing you know, that band is gone. But it really is an old story going back at least to Janis Joplin. Who remembers Big Brother & the Holdingcompany?

Excellent point about Janis. I remember a documentary showing label execs basically kissing her ass saying a monkey could play those instruments she was the star. They surrounded her with a bunch of Yes Men and she couldn't function in that environment.

It wound up being her demise since she retreated to drugs. You know what....record labels killed Janis Joplin.
