A Proposal to Help Modern Rock Radio
I
have an easy solution for modern Rock radio. Modern Rock radio relies
heavily on already established artists to promote the new ones. You tune
in to KBBL Bayside to hear Wolfman Zack give you Stone Temple Pilots,
Nirvana, Pearl Jam and then get Shinedown, Kings of Leon, Three Days
Grace.
People who listen to those radio stations are bombarded by the older artists and you get tired of hearing your favorite band. I am proposing a six month ban on some artists - effectively removing them from rotation for a full six months.
Nirvana was an influential band that brought about the demise of the excess in the 80's. They need to be the first retired. I loved Smells Like Teen Spirit, but it has been stomped in to the ground and every rock DJ has pissed on it's ashes. It has gotten to the point where I turn off the radio when Nirvana is on just because I am tired of hearing them. This shouldn't be the case.
When the artists' probation time is up, another artist takes their place. This is announced to all the listeners, hell the listeners can vote on the next artist to be retired. I bet you would get a lot of votes for Pearl Jam to be the second one to be retired.
I don't think it is a hit or a negative strike against these bands, it is more of a statement that they are overplayed to the point of nausea. The other option is to retire all the band's radio hits and rotate in a few b-sides or deeper album tracks. Songs like Negative Creep and Paper Cuts could replace Smells Like Teen Spirit and In Bloom.
There are going to be a few of you out there who say "modern rock radio sucks get satellite." Well I am not a millionaire CEO like yourself and can't afford to pay for radio. I also can't justify the price when I am only in my car for seven minutes of commute time. Sure satellite radio has benefits: hardly no repeat, deeper album tracks, bands you don't hear on modern rock radio, but also the price is the biggest downside.
I think this will help people maintain sanity and a love of these great bands longer because if I hear Epic by Faith No More one more time I swear! That is their worst song that radio airplay has just murdered.

I nominate the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I love the Chili's, but for the love of God, they are played on my local rock station 45 times per day and I'm at the point where I want to stick a needle through my eardrum when Suck My Kiss gets played. Or I could just change the station. Either way.

That won't help modern rock radio because the fact is they are still dominated by shitty younger bands. Rock is dead now a days.
