East of Anything's Self Titled Album Review
I really apologize to East of Anything because they sent their album East of Anything in a long time ago and I have been so busy. So sorry Gene, I didn't just want your music for free.
East of Anything is a three piece by way of Philadelphia. They have been pounding the bar scene for a while now and somehow I have missed them. We reviewed their live show here and that is really where you want to see EOA, because that's where they shine. You can get a better feel for how gifted and sound Gene is as a guitar player.
The album begins with Darren rolling around the kit and providing a double bass drum sound. Then like a naked man with a trenchcoat, Gene exposes his guitar work with a completely unexpected guitar solo. It is loud, in your face, just like that trenchcoat fellow's penis.
East of Anything have a modern take on the bluesy rock sound of Led Zeppelin and Van Halen. Hell the song Innocent starts out like Everybody Wants Some with the a similar drum beat and run the pick up the strings guitar sound. Gene's voice starts low and lets the suspense and music build, which is merely audio foreplay - teasing your ears for the big bombast about to explode.
Sure they have the bluesy sound, but they are also mindful of the pop influence seen in bands like U2 and Incubus. In fact, sometimes Gene's voice has a Brandon Boyd of Incubus style. There is one song called Brighter Side that sounds like it could be an Incubus song off Make Yourself. It has a funky beat and excellent, furious guitar work.
The Wall of Sound production used here is sometimes overpowering. Songs like Brighter Side conclude in this Wall of Sound and it's an overwhelming cacophony of sound. This could be done on purpose as it is the last song on the album, but it is done throughout. That is my only minor criticism....and I really had to search for that criticism because I truly like the album. It is an ambitious first album.
East of Anything shine like the chariot of Apollo in the live setting, but you can appreciate them in the album setting. Soulful bluesy guitar, and a Hendrix like rhythm section (Darren and Brian) congeal to form one of the most refreshing bands to come out of Philadelphia in a long time.

You can buy East of Anything's debut album through Best Buy, iTunes, Amazon or CDNow Baby. Check out their Official Website for a taste of their music and their upcoming live shows. Here is a hint, it is cheaper at Amazon.
