Steven Adler Releases My Appetite for Destruction Autobiography

Anyone pick up Steven Adler's book My Appetite for Destruction: Sex & Drugs & Guns N' Roses? It is a fascinating read that chronicles one of the saddest decline for a talented guy.

If you listen to Matt Sorum drum, it is clean and precise. But I prefer Adler's drumming which was wilder, dirtier and more powerful. Adler didn't know how to dial it back and that gave Appetite for Destruction it's ballsy feel.

That inability to dial it back has been painfully detailed in Slash's biography with the infamous Butter Tray story where Adler had a butter tray in his fridge full of heroin and cocaine. He states in his current autobiography that he has had 28 overdoses, countless rehab stints, three suicide attempts, two heart attacks, jail time, and a stroke that has left him with slurred speech. And still, after all that, he can't seem to stay sober.

"I've relapsed probably five times in the last two years. The last time, believe it or not, was on a drug that I never did before — that OxyContin stuff. Five or six months ago I ran into somebody who gave me a couple. Next thing I know, my wife is showing me a picture of me passed out in the hallway. So I called Dr. Drew and I called Slash and said, 'I need to go to detox right now.' I picked myself up, and I dusted myself off, and I started again — and I'm going to keep doing that until I get it right. Now I've got five months clean."

This is how powerful addiction is people. Some people can just decide to stop cold turkey and some no matter how much they want to stop can't. I am really shocked Adler has lasted this long, but I won't be shocked when I wake up one morning and find that Adler has overdosed for the final time. It is the road he has been heading down for a long time and the world will have lost a great drummer and a sad chewed up soul who is a genuine guy.

You can pick up your copy of Adler's book through Amazon. Though I supported my local library by checking the book out there free of charge. Advertising on the site has been non-existent.
