Dissecting Lyrics Part One - Autograph's Turn Up The Radio
We have an on-going segment here called "Reading Too Much into Lyrics"
(you can find them all here). But I have decided to look at lyrics that
really make no sense. If you craft a good enough song musically, lyrics
don't matter. The Beatles
ob-la-di ob-la-da is the perfect example of that.
My first foray into this will be Autograph's Turn Up the Radio.
I'm working hard, you're working too
We do it every day
For every minute I have to work
I need a minute of play
Ok, those lyrics aren't bad and make sense. While not practical to have 8 hours of play every day with 8 hours of work...you gotta sleep sometime (or do we?), I can appreciate the sentiment.
Day in, day out, all week long
Things go better with rock
The only time I turn it down
Is when I'm sleepin it off
An honest study of how the lyricist gets through his day - rock n' roll. Me too, I can agree. I am not sure what he is sleeping off...a hang over? Drained from work? He leaves it up to you.
Now listen
I wanna shake, I wanna dance
So count it off one, two, three
I hear the beat, I'm in a trance
No better place to be
What the hell? We were just talking about sleeping and working and needing playtime. Now we are dancing and in a trance.
Daytime Nighttime, anytime
Things go better with rock
I'm goin twenty four hours a day
I can't seem to stop
Ok we are now talking about rock n' roll and this lyricists incessant need for it. However, we determined in the first verse he is sleeping something off, but now he is going 24 hours a day. How is this possible?
Those are the verses. Here is the chorus:
Turn up the radio
I need the music, gimme some more
Turn up the tape machine
I wanna feel it and you know what I mean
Kids these days have never seen a tape deck so that is a dated reference and I have no idea what this person means by feeling it. Feel what? The music? What music? Is it the music of Autograph?
Who cares about the lyrics? This song needs to be TURNED UP!
