Heavy Glow's The Filth and the Fury EP Review
Heavy Glow is a modern band out of San Diego, but if you listened to
their music it sounds more like 70's Jimi Hendrix than anything you can hear
on
the radio. They sent their EP The Filth and The Fury for review and I
haven't
stopped having sex since.Their EP does absolute wonders to the loins of women and I finally understand why Jimi Hendrix was getting laid all the time....despite the fact he was black, created timeless music, and had really long fingers.
The band encapsulates what was great about the 70's rock scene, but adds a modern bluesy take like The Black Keys. Heavy psychedelic distorted guitars like Cream combined with lulling beats, generate a frothing atmosphere that exudes sex. I played the track Bourgeois Baby for my girlfriend and by minute two she was twirling around ready to spark up a joint. Sorry that was me. I am a writer, we don't have girlfriends.
Apparently the EP was recorded in one room live in six hours. You can't tell. It is perfectly recorded and balanced. When the basslines laid down by Joe Brooks need to be accentuated, they are tastefully brought to the ear front. When it is time for Jared Mullins to sing or play guitar everything is balanced again. If you told me this record took months to record and process, I'd believe it. The recording is impeccable.
Each song on the five song EP is memorable in it's own right. But my favorites were the Hot Mess and Bourgeois Baby. I love the chugging riff thick Hot Mess. The head bobbing drum line in this song, which is banged out by Dan Kurtz (no relation to Col. Kurtz from Apocalypse Now) reminds me of a young Mitch Mitchell. The guitar solo in Hot Mess is an homage to Hendrix and Clapton. It is brilliant.
Any more fellating of this band, they will have to buy more time. If this band doesn't become a house hold name, it is a travesty. They cherry picked the cool aspects of the 70's rock scene, and left the disco pants for the assholes of Studio 54. Check out their MySpace for details on how to purchase The Filth and the Fury. It is priced at a modest 4.95 and it is the best you can buy at that price.
