Razorblade Skin at Mojo 13 on 02.18.2010

This review should have gone up on Friday, but it didn't. I would give a half assed reason why, but fuck that.

On Thursday night, I saw my favorite Philadelphia band, Razorblade Skin at Mojo 13...or as I call it "Clown Mecca." Mojo 13 is a tiny bar next to a Mexican food market and across the street from Mr. Pasta. The entrance has the creepiest clown out front to scare all the people away who have coulrophobia. That must be everyone in Wilmington because the bar is rarely packed. That is a shame because they normally have great bands playing there.

The walls of Mojo 13 have mystical circus performers like Zola the Sadist. The stage has a great circus vibe too. They used to have bars up on the side of the stage to make it appear the musicians were just animals in a cage, but they have since been removed. Probably a fire hazard or something, fucking "Man."

We have covered Razorblade Skin many times on this site. The band is the brain child of Mikey Primadonna who is the nicest guy in the Philadelphia rock scene. I am pretty sure the man would cut my grass if I asked him. Why do I tell you this? It is because it is the complete opposite of his stage persona.

The lead singer of Razorblade Skin is gruff, harsh, and enjoys a horror show. As I have said before, the band is one part Misfits, one part Alice Cooper, and one part New York Dolls. Those influences blend smoothly to create an entertaining and down right audible pleasure land.

The songs are so god damn catchy, I was singing them for days afterward. Songs like Molly, Vampires, and You're the One all have sing-a-long choruses, sweet crunching guitar riffs, and thumping bass/drum lines.

Razorblade Skin has a rotating list of musicians that play with Mikey. This time Mikey had the bass player and guitarist of Clashing Plaid on stage with him. They did a great job with the tunes and still infused their own style into each song.

I do believe the highlight of the set was the KISS Cold Gin cover. It is hard to find a cover version I like better than the original, but their cover version was better. It might be because Greed $immons voice is fucking terrible. Anyone who can sing a bit makes a Greed song sound infinitely better.

If you get a shot, check out Razorblade Skin at their next show at the Cherrywood Lounge in Clementon, NJ. They are playing with Acey Slade's Dark Party. Go to Razorblade Skin's MySpace site for more information and to preview the great tunes.
