Raisin Hell In Glitter City CD Compilation Review

Raisin Hell in Glitter City FrontI was just in Glitter City, raising Hell. But while causing mayhem and destruction, I realized, I need a soundtrack for this wanton destruction. Enter Raisin Hell in Glitter City.

Compilation CD's are always a mixed bag - no pun intended. They are generally hit or miss with one or two good songs and the rest crap. But when the compilation CD is put together by Mikey Primadonna, you know you will get quality you deserve for the right price. Raisin Hell in Glitter City is no exception.Mikey was able to get artists from all over the world to toss a song his way for one of the coolest compilation cd's I have heard.

Sometimes the fun of these compilation CD's is just hearing the broad spectrum of artists and how they sound. It is almost like Christmas because each song might be by an artist you don't know or have never heard of before.

Pretty Wild opens the CD and they are a Rock n' Roll import band from Sweden. The band is an L.A. throwback band taking you back to when Rock was cool, dangerous, and was screwing your sister in a closet.

The CD jumps to the Philadelphia punk band Clashing Plaid. They have been around a while and raising their own brand of hell in Philadelphia. Social Distortion like punk harmonies, ripping solos, and ass clenching bass lines characterize their music and you will be a fan.

Razorblade Skin's Molly is the third track with Mikey at the helm growling and cemented in horror punk and glam metal. I love all the Razorblade Skin songs, this one is no exception. The only problem is the too low recording quality on all the tracks.

Track four is a surprise, it is Acey Slade's take on The Cult's seminal classic She Sells Sanctuary. Slade remains true to the original, while adding his own personal take. Slade's a great musician, but I still harbor a grudge toward him for disbanding Trashlight Vision.

All tracks are really great in their own way, except one - Daggers by StarSkream. The singer starts out like a Scott Stapp ripoff, but then switches vocal styles to a forced whine. If they stuck as a Creed influenced band, it wouldn't be that bad (though I despise Creed). I don't mind the powerful drums, I don't really mind the Mark Tremonti guitar work, but the vocals really irritate my ear drums. I have no tolerance for whiny singers, as evidenced here. I haven't heard the rest of StarSkream's work, so maybe this was just a bad song not fully indicative of the band's total work. I will give them the benefit of the doubt, but I deleted the song from the Official Blogs N' Roses iPod.

Despite that little hiccup, the compilation is wonderful. It is a diverse tapestry of rock n roll, showcasing punk, heavy metal, glam metal, and straight up rock n' roll. If you want a copy of your own there are two way to get it.

a) Write in to RaisinHell@blogsnroses.com with the subject line Glitter City and you will be entered to win the CD for free. Enter as many times as you want. Contest ends September 1.

b) You send Mikey a note from this MySpace site and request your own copy.

Whichever way you choose, I guarantee you will love Raisin Hell in Glitter City. If you don't, you can kick me in the testicles when you see me out and about.
