Crue Fest 2 2009 Review from Camden, New Jersey

It is a beautiful day in Philadelphia. Big puffy white clouds, no humidity, the smell of booze and cheap women in the air. Crue fest and its merry men have rolled into Camden, New Jersey. It is the second year for the traveling festival and this year it kicks off in Philadelphia. This years lineup seems to be better than last years with Motley Crue, Godsmack, Drowning Pool, Theory of a Deadman, and Charm City Devils.

We sent Lars Wettner down to the Susquehanna Bank Center to take in the sights, sounds, and debauchery of the day. In turn, he has to try and maintain sobriety long enough to give live reviews after each band performs. We will be updating this post throughout the festival and adding setlists. So stay tuned and see what happens.

****UPDATE***

Charm City Devils opened the show a bit before the 5:00pm start time. Lars said he missed about 25% of their set because he thought the show started at 5:00. Here are some of his thoughts on how they sounded and how the crowd received this relatively unknown band.

***UPDATE***

Drowning Pool was up next and Lars was impressed with the new lead singer, Ryan McCombs. He actually carried the band, which is surprising. They played some new material off the album, Loudest Common Denominator. Lars felt that music stands up with the old material. You can listen to his thoughts below along with a hilarious story about his future brother in law.

***Update***

Lars enjoyed Theory of a Deadman. He said they had no trouble getting the crowd into it and singing along. This is probably due more toward the radio friendly hits they have had. Again with a minimalistic stage setup. The first three bands opting for a simple banner behind them. Lars also admitted that this year seems to be better than last year which he attributes to the better band lineup. Though he feels the crowd should have been filing into the venue more than it has.

One thing he hated, which I totally agree with, the second stage is a bit distracting. You have to pick and choose the bands you want to see because, at times, they are playing at the same time. This is a shame for bands like Rev Theory who deserve a larger crowd, than they will get performing while Godsmack is on the main stage. Lars recommends making the festival all day with the second stage bands going before the main stage. I think this would work well and allow people to spend more money.

***UPDATE***

Godsmack just performed a 45-50 minute set. They opened up with their new song Whiskey Hangover, which is an odd song to open with. They brought it. This is a band that can headline a festival by themselves and are not holding anything back opening up for the Crue. They had pyro, drum solos, and a setlist full of crowd favorites. They are going to be a hard act to follow and Motley Crue are going to have to bring their A-Game tonight.

***Update***

Lars Wettner left early. This is because Motley Crue failed to impress. They just didn't have it. The crowd was not into the Dr. Feelgood album and while the band tried to get them into it, they just couldn't. The stage setup was cool, pulling out the hospital theme from the album, but with a long set change and an even longer guitar solo took the crowd out of it. Maybe having Godsmack open up for you while you are performing one of your fourth best album (Too Fast for Love, Shout at the Devil, Girls Girls Girls) might not have been the best decision.

Lars was not happy with Vince Neil stating his displeasure in the way Vince doesn't really sing the lines and relies too heavily on crowd participation to sing. The one highlight seemed to be the playing of Tommy Lee who did have some success in getting the crowd participating.

This was the first night on the tour and big bands like the Crue take a few shows to work out the kinks and the rust. We are eager to hear your thoughts. Did the Crue live up to your expectations? Was the decision to play the entire Dr. Feelgood album the wrong one? Should this be the Godsmack Fest?

Godsmack should have been the main act - I think this may be the last year for Motley Crue... their sound was terrible, they were not tight and Vince Neil cannot sing, sorry.

Godsmack was amazing, plain and simple.. Crue was ok, Vince Neil's vocals were better then some recent times hearing him, which is not saying much. All in all, a very good show.

I have been a fan since 1984 and have never had the opportunity to see the Cure live.... until now. My 7 year old son has been begging me to see a concert for a year and my cousin is visiting from France so I thought this be an ideal show to bring them to. I bought great seats 30 rows back on Craigslist for 1/4 of face value, so now I'm even more pumped for the show. We ended up getting to the show 20 minutes before Godsmack hit the stage. They took the stage and shredded!! Their setlist was amazing, the sound was perfect and the stage show was AWESOME.... my son loved the 30 foot flames shooting up behind the drums. I never knew that the Sully (the singer) could play drums, but he got on the second kit towards the end of the show and the 2 drummers rocked it. The crowd went nuts, my cousin went nuts and my son is a fan for life!!! AWESOME show!! They exited the stage, the curtain dropped and the roadies for the Cure donning labcoats and green scrub pants began the transformation of the stage for what was no doubt going to be one of the most memorable shows in my life. 30 Minutes later, the lights dim, the curtain rose and there they are.... MOTLEY CRUE. Only, something is wrong. You could barely hear Tommy's bass drum, Vince's vocals faded in and out. They sounded like shit. Did these guys miss soundcheck???? I love the Dr. Feelgood album and knew that they were going to play all of it. What I failed to realize was that some of the songs on the album were never meant to be played live. After 4 songs my son and cousin were begging me to leave. I told them to give it a few more songs. Depressed and disappointed, I went to get a beer. Sonofabitch.... they stopped serving beer!! According to the girl at the concession stand, they stopped serving early due to the crowd being rowdier than normal- no doubt the result of too much tailgating and a shitty performance so far from the CRUE. I headed back to my seat empty handed and had to fight the opposing traffic from other dissapointed fans heading towards the exit. I have been to many concerts and NEVER have I seen such a mass exedus of fans for the while the headliners were playing. 2 songs later, I gave in to the pleas and left... it was 10 pm. My son now calls them Motley Poo and I tend to agree. They sucked. I will never see them again. In my humble opinion, Godsmack should headline and the Crue should be banished to the second stage so that the good bands can play the main stage. Get to the show when the doors open, check out the second stage and all of the bands on the main stage and when Godsmack is done with their set, get the hell out of the venue. My opinion of the Crue dropped after last night. I wish I never saw their act. It's kind of like seeing the hot girlfriend from high school 20 years later and now she weighs 300 pounds.

Regretably have to agree. Didn't go to the second stage at all. Something was totally wrong with the sound system for the first three bands, and it was totally flat. The first real sign of life in the crowd was when AC/DC was playing while the set changed, just before Godsmack. These guys saved this show. I wasn't familiar with their songs, but they hooked me in. Crue had Spinal Tap like moments right from the word go. Perhaps it was first show problems and they'll work it out, hope so for the sake of those seeing this later. Saw Crue Fest One last year and top to bottom it was a better show. Each band built on the energy of the other and no stupid technical difficulties.

I attended the Camden show last night. I agree with these posts. I love the Crue, but unfortunately they were not on last night. Vince sounded bad. I believe they made a mistake asking Godsmack to tour with them only because Godsmack was so on last night that there was (is) not way the Crue can follow them. I left after three songs and absolutely cannot wait until Godsmack headlines this fall/winter.

Everyone here knows what they are talking about.I totally came to see Godsmack and they certainly did rock my world!! I felt bad thinking about leaving before Motley Crue came on (to avoid a bit of traffic) so I stayed. Big mistake. Not impressed. It was really cool to hear Live Wire though.Theory of a Dead Man rocked the house too!

Godsmack absolutely rocked the house! They SMOKED the Crue! It was just embarrassing. Sully'c voice sounded great. The drum battle is always the highlight of the show. Their set was flawless. We left after the third Crue song. They sounded awful and Vince can't sing. We saw alot of other people leaving too. Our friends were sitting in another section and they stayed for longer that us and they said their kids wanted to leave halfway through Crue's set. The only disappointment is that Godsmack's set wasn't longer! We want SmackFest 2010!

All the bands did great, but u can all stop kissing Godsmack's ass now...Just because Godsmack was spectacular, doesnt mean that the others bands werent...get ur heads out of ur asses, everyone at the concert was phenomenal!! I do not know what is going on in Camden, but the Crue absolutely rocked the f'n house last nite in Cleveland. They did not mess around. There was no long speeches or crazy solos. They came out and played the Dr. Feelgood album top to bottom. We also heard S.O.L.A., Primal scream, Wildside, girls, Home Sweet Home, total they played 18 songs. Un-F'n real. Mick is back, he must be on hormone pills or roids cause he was everywhere, Vince brought his vocals, Nikki always brings it, and Tommy just wanted to bang his drums. No boob cam or drum solo for the kid. Strictly business. I left that show after the Crue played and felt like I was beat with Nikki and Mick's guitars. GodSmack also brought the pain with a great show, Theroy of Deadman do you want to be Rock or Pop? Figure it out. Cant wait for Cruefest3, if your from Camden travel to C-Town next year.

Now it is Seattle's turn. I was at the White River amphitheater last night. It was the night of my 43rd birthday and The Crue came to help me party. I have seen crue twice in the 80's and always remembered what a great rock and roll party it was. My wife had never seen them and has waited for years for the show. She just read the Heroin Diaries and was in a true concert mood.
We arrived at the show a little late and miss Dead Man but could hear them from the parking lot as we drank some pre concert Jesus juice. They sounded good for what they are. Say what you want about them. They are a fun band that appeal to a wide range. And they sell records.
We made our way into the show and I was very surprised at all the empty seats I was seeing. But I guess we are in hard times and money is tight. On for my beer before Godsmack. WoW, $9.00 FOR A BEER!! Anyway, GODSMACK hits the stage and KICKED ASS. From first note to the final cord I was very impressed. I have seen over 125 shows in my life and these guys had me from the start. The drummer who I haven't any idea his name even beat the hell out of the skins. The band was tight and into it. If I have one complaint it was the volume wasn't loud enough. That's something that goes with being a opening band I know. But, Godsmack wasn't a true opening band as it was. Maybe the crue thought that would help them out. Nope.
Sadly, CRUE SUCKED. I can't believe I am saying it but it is true. It wasn't just the Godsmack being that good. Crue sucked. The guitar solo was more like a 13 year old learning to play. No skill at all just plain sad. Even the lights were aimed badly. They used bright clear lights like you see used to shine on the crowd sometimes at other shows. Except they used them all show long. Maybe from the pit or the flat in front of the stage it was ok. But for most of the seats and the Grass area it was so bright you couldn't see anything on stage. Not even Tommy's ego. My guess is that Motley Crue thought they could go without rehearsing much if any at all for this tour. They figure they can just stumble through the tour, collect a boat of cash and do it again next year. Ummmm, Don't think so Vince. They aren't even gonna get respect from these two. I can say I am happy to have gone to GODSMACK FEST 2009. They did make me a fan for sure. That's what happens when you have talent, passion and give a crap about your fans I guess.

I am going this Friday night, here in Cincinnati. Last year, I thought Buck Cherry stole the show, they kicked ass. I am excited to see Godsmack, I've always wanted to see them live. I've seen Crue a few times live and I am not impressed. Sorry diehard fans, they sucked last year and I don't think a year can change Vince's non-vocal attempts. How can you put out some kick ass music then not remember the words? We have some serious partiers here in Cincy, so maybe that will help before we leave the show most likely after Godsmack.....
