Reverse Mount Rushmore Milk the Dead Horse Review
Revere Mount Rushmore is another band from Canada that has emailed in
for an album review. I sat for days pondering what could be the reverse
of Mount Rushmore and I determined a stone sculpture in the mountains
featuring Jesus, Oprah, Obama, and Ted Danson would probably be the
antithesis of the real Mount Rushmore.
This band is tough to categorize because they sound like a lot of their heroes. You have a heavy Black Sabbath influence, which can easily be heard in songs like Kicksand. There are other times they remind me of Queens of the Stone Age (Art School Project). And "A" Song sounds like a reject from the Eagles of Death Metal. But something you get from those three bands, Reverse Mount Rushmore is stoner rock.
I don't think you need to be high to appreciate Milk the Dead Horse, but it doesn't hurt. There are some great songs on this album, "A" Song, His Old Self, The Duke of Sit, and then some songs, which pale in comparison to the three I just mentioned (Art School Project).
The band is solid, great distorted guitar and vocals reminiscent of Tony Iommi; thick heavy bass and drum lines pushing the guitars and vocals to the eventual climax. All while helping you weave in and out of your thoughts while you enjoy your favorite medicinal remedy.
I think my only complaint are Brent Fagan's voice isn't used enough. His talent is pushed to the back on some, if not all the songs. I understand stoner rock is more about the laissez-faire attitude with only providing enough vocals to keep things moving and letting the bass and drums create a trippy dream, but his ethereal vocals are unnecessarily lost amongst the controlled billows of smoke.
Either way most sons had enough for casual music lovers to appreciate something in them. At the very least, you will be involuntarily banging your head and catch yourself tapping your feet. So smoke a bowl and put on Milk the Dead Horse. See where your thoughts go. Check out their MySpace page for all information on the band.
