The Darlings of Chelsea The Mimico Sessions EP Review
The Darlings of Chelsea sent in their EP for review about a month ago.
Unfortunately, I contracted an STD and spent the last month calling
everyone I had been with to tell them they will have a monthly present
in the form of genital herpes. As I was calling all these former
lovers, I was listening to The Darlings of Chelsea's EP The Mimico
Sessions.
Thankfully, The Mimico Sessions are better than an STD, which is hard to do because some STD's totally rock! I had to do some research for the band, so I just hastily typed in the band's name and got this website. I have no idea why the band also sells furniture, but everyone needs to pay the bills somehow.
The band is a Toronto gutter supergroup. The DoC, as I will now call them, contain members from The Black Halos, Cheerleader, Parkas, Robin Black and the IRS, Scratching Post, and CJ Sleez. If you haven't heard of any of those bands, you are either living a puritan lifestyle or a loser who studies film in Las Vegas at 27 years old.
The band sounds like The Tressels meets The Foo Fighters. Sean Robertson has a Dave Grohl like vocal styling, a gruff yet sensual singing style. Jay Millette and Paul Thompson trade licks like the New York Dolls fucking Guns N' Roses, but continue to keep the music in the pop realm...for the most part.
Some of the songs off The Mimico Sessions showcase the band's attempt at leaving their gutter sleaze behind them and opting for a radio friendly, arena rock n' roll. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this as the band has the ability to really infuse some legitimacy to a U.S. rock radio decimated by post-grunge imitators and Nickelback rip-offs. Sadly, it will take a Canadian band to add legitimacy to a US rock industry. But I am willing to accept that.
Other times the band is pulled back into their sleaze roots with songs like Sleazy Rock 'n' Roller and The Devil is a Woman. Dirty, untamed blues licks, lyrics about sex, and no falsetto vocals.
We have gotten a lot of great EP's from bands in the Toronto area. That scene is taking off and it sounds like a great place for Blogs N' Roses HQ. Unfortunately, I can't travel outside of the United States due to that dead hooker (male) head that was found in my Cadillac De ville a few years back. But if the band should decide to kick Philadelphia in the testicles, we will be sure to be front and center dripping wet, and fondling breasts right alongside them.
I was looking for a picture that really defined the sound of the band, but the picture on the MySpace were a bit tame compared to the unbridled energy in their music. So I doctored one of them to give you the true feeling of the music, which of course stands antithetical to one of their songs.

Check out the band's regular site for more information on who they are, what they do, where they will be, and buy their EP.

The record takes us down a musical journey that harnesses the best elements of punk and 1970s and 1980s rock – the urgency, the bass, the drums and that penchant for sex, girls and anarchy.I would like to thank you for the efforts you have made in writing this article. I am hoping the same best work from you in the future as well.
I hope you didn't have to give too many calls for that STD thing of yours and maybe this will help you figure our whom did you get it from. As for the band I'll just go with the puritan lifestyle. Enjoyed your style!
What a bizarre story. I did a quick search on a couple of these bands and they weren't bad. I don't think I have listened to a lot of bands from Canada. I'll keep a look out for them in the future.
Thanks for sharing the info on these bands. I just did look up the Mimico Sessions, and I agree, they are good. I think they have a great shot at the big time.
Why didn’t I find this post earlier? Keep up the good work!
