Otep Speaks Out About Prop 8

Look everyone is in an uproar over this Proposition 8 shit. Even Otep Shamaya, lead singer of Otep and all around groovy chick, spoke out against the California Supreme Court's ruling to uphold Proposition 8.

She wrote on her MySpace site:

"Our system of law is designed to protect the minority from discrimination by the majority. If this ruling stands unchallenged, what's next? Will some states repeal a woman's right to vote? Will some states (again) forbid interracial marriage? Will some states deny housing, or jobs based on religious preference?

"If they can legislate against what they call a 'sexual preference,' what is to stop them from legislating against religious preference? People choose their religion. We choose to believe or not to believe in God. So what is to stop the majority in any state from discriminating against those who do not share the majority religious preference?"

Otep, see that boat out there, you missed it. Let's delve into what EXACTLY the California Supreme Court decided. They decided to uphold the ability of Californians to vote and change the state constitution. This means that Proposition 8 holds because the California people voted in favor of it.

People are outraged at the wrong shit. The California Supreme Court did not rule that gays suck and shouldn't be married. They ruled that the California people can vote change to their own state constitution. That is a good thing. If you wanted a governor to only be in office for one year, you could lobby that and get it on the ballot. If it passes, well hey you just changed the state constitution.

You wouldn't want the Supreme Court to dismiss this ruling because then the rights of the populace would be infringed upon. Legislators could make amendments to the constitution with no check or balances. That is when it would get to a point where women's rights could be repealed or whatever doomsday scenario Otep was referring too.

This isn't a gay issue. It started out as one, but when it reached the Supreme Court of California, it wasn't any more. If all of your supporters would have gone to the polls and voted against Prop 8, this wouldn't be a problem.

But people don't want to blame themselves. But...but...but....conspiracy against gays. Nope, sorry. That ain't the case as far as the Supreme Court of California feels. Fighting this ruling is a STUPID cause. If you get it repealed, you are all fucked out there. Your legislators can do whatever they want and you people can't vote to change the constitution to stop them unless you vote them out.

Bring the fight in another Proposition to null and void Prop 8. Then you can get your gay marriage. And before you go an bash me, I support gay rights and their right to MARRY. Fuck civil unions they are for people looking for a green card. You should be able to marry. But I also support the right of the people to edit the constitution of the state.
