Exclusive Interview with Mike from Dead Kids
We received an email asking us to review a single for a band called Dead Kids. I had never heard of the band, but with a name like that you don't say no to it. Mike Title, lead singer and mainman of Dead Kids, sent of the single and we reviewed it here. Through a short email correspondence about masturbation and snuff films, I realized this man would be perfect for a Blogs N' Roses interview. Due to the time difference, it had to occur through email. What follows is deep, dark, and insightful. Be afraid.
BnR: Can you explain the genesis behind the band name, Dead Kids? Were any children harmed in the making of this name?
Mike: In the beginning there was a brain and the brain made in the skull was dropped from a height when the baby was taken out the cot and the name came from that. I don't want children to hurt baby, I want them to feel inspired. In fact I don't care about the kids because they are doing fine. It's the adults that need looking after man.
BnR: Where do you normally draw inspiration for your music?
Mike: You got to live it right? That's what you hear. I'm not selling a fucking lifestyle though. Inspiration comes for me from extreme and raw emotion. From being out there and putting yourself on the edge. I have no clue. Right now its spring time and I'm enjoying that. The sun is out and everyone is talking to each other for no reason at all. I love that. The sun is going down as i type this to you and that's a beautiful thing, like the baby Jesus.
BnR: What band is a heavy influence on you and the band?
Mike: Well we all love and hate everything between us. George's loves The Invisible String band, Kraftwerk and The Fall and I love Rick James and Otis Redding. The influence could be anything. It probably wont be musical though. I wish i could say ' hey man we just wanted to sound exactly like Duran Duran' but i cant. It would make things easier though. And i would get to hang out in pastel suits too.
BnR: I saw in your press kit the following quote: ""Ah life, it’s a slow death but I like it" and encapsulates the spirit of a band that operates more like a terrorist organization" what do they mean by that?
Mike: Well life is a slow death isn't it? We are all on this inevitable journey with our bodies breaking down. I like to celebrate that though. It does not have to be something that gets in the way of how beautiful it is to live in the moment. So that's what we do and performing music is the moment. It's precisely that. The whole terrorist thing is that we sneak in and out of places radicalizing the underground haha! I'm fucking ridiculous.
BnR: How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you before? Remember, most of our readers are American so no "sticky wicket" comparisons.
Mike: Our live show is a sweating, euphoric and joyful experience. Then again I might get drunk and angry and ruin it for everyone.
BnR: Would you consider writing a kick ass rock song about a music website whose principle writer spends his time partying alone with alcohol and porn?
Mike: Its called 'I'm your cream saver baby'. It has a great middle eight.
BnR: What would you be doing if you weren't in rock n roll?
Mike: I would be writing the questions myself and then answering them and then sitting around and reading that shit. I might even send off a few angry emails and say that I had been misrepresented by that blog or magazine and that they were going to have to deal with me. I would dress up as a girl in lipstick and get laid a lot. And I would travel.
BnR: How do Dead Kids write songs? Do you lock yourself in a brothel and pound out songs until they are ready to record?
Mike: We usually kidnap bands we play with and force them at knifepoint to write a song that is good enough to stop me from cutting their hands off. That adrenaline rush can really spark some creative juice. I did that with Lenny Kravitz once. I let him keep ARE YOU GONNA GO MY WAY. I'm cool like that.
BnR: Who would you most like to tour with?
Mike: Van Halen reformed with David Lee Roth.
BnR: Who do you find to be the biggest fraud in the music industry? Band or individual, your choice
Mike: Oh that's a big question. Look at you sneaking in a big question at number 10. Well I think the fraud is you brother. You told me that you worked for Rolling Stone and now I see we're on this blog man. I don't dig that. I will let it slide this time, but don't ever pull that shit on me again.
BnR: Hey, we are not above misrepresentation to get big interviews. Just the other day I said I was Pamela Des Barres to get a Mick Jagger interview. Sad thing was he was in his "I like men" stage. Sadly, right after I bought some of Bret Michaels Hair extensions.
BnR: David Lee Roth once said "It's not who wants to sleep with you, it's who wants to sleep with you again." Do you agree with that statement?
Mike: Well tell me something, have you ever wanted to fuck someone again and they didn't want to? I can think of this girl with red hair I met at a party. She still writes to me and shit, but shes kind of unattainable. Usually you can both tell if it's going to happen again surely. I think if they keep coming back then there's good chemistry, man. Don't matter how good you think you are ladies and gentlemen cause if you ain't got chemistry with someone then you ain't shit.
That was certainly an eye opening interview. I learned a lot about music, myself, and Mike, which is the goal. I also learned about Lenny Kravitz being kidnapped. Appropriate since his birthday is today. Check out Dead Kids on MySpace. They have their latest tour dates if you are in Europe. If you are not in Europe, you can buy their single Snakes on iTunes.
