U2's Get On Your Boots Meaning
I was watching VH1 this morning at work when I saw a clip of Bono and Adam of U2 discussing the meaning behind their single "Get On Your Boots." I was wondering what the hell the stupid song meant, so I continued watching.
Bono says that 'get on your boots' is East African slang for 'put a condom on.' When he says this Adam looks kind of shocked. The meaning seems to have caught him off guard. Bono then says something to the effect of "Oh yea, I didn't tell you because you wouldn't have liked it." I couldn't seem to find the clip on VH1.com so I could embed it here. You will have to take my word for it...or watch VH1 until they replay it.
I went to the internet to find proof that 'get on your boots' actually meant 'put a condom on.' Proof was scare, but I found this little diddy. (Article)
"On a similarly high note Bono told Jonathan Ross last night the meaning behind new single Get On Your Boots was east African slang for 'use a condom'."
U2 has been a political band, a love band, a Pop band, but never a sexual band. I don't think the rest of U2 would have gone along with this had they known. Safe sex in Africa is not U2's plight, but BONO's plight. In the past, the whole band has seemed to agree on the statements being put forth in song and Bono speaks for the band while they are touring, recording, etc. This condom message could be construed as U2's message.
But then there is Political Bono. He is not the frontman of U2. He is the savior of Africa, the individual standing up for debt relief for smaller nations, etc. I think that sometimes the band's political ambition is in line with Bono's (see debt relief for Africa), but other times it is starkly contrasted (see new condom line)
This is why Bono had to surreptitiously sneak a "Hey Africa wrap up your infected penis" message into a song. I don't like this. It divides U2 - the band - into The Band vs The Bono. I doubt it could be disastrous, but I will bet Larry Mullen Jr. is pissed!

I would like to thank you for the efforts you have made in writing this article. I mostly agree with you most of the point I have subscribed the feed and looking forward for the followup subscriptions
I think this song refers to the Isaiah passage about how beautiful are the feet of them that bring good news!! Going to use it for the youth and my talk on mission
I am sorry brother, but you are WAY off on this one. The God of the bible is a HOLY God. Nowhere in his word can I find Paul referring to "sexy boots" as "meaning His love and grace." Brother, let the world (with U2 in it) be the world, and Christ be our world.

I honestly cannot get into this song. I mean, it's not terrible for most bands but for U2 it is. It's really just decent. I'm hoping the album will be amazing, just because of one okay single doesn't mean the album will be disappointing. Anyway, Bono said this song is about how women are the future and they'll get us out of this mess (or something like that)
