Has Someone Figured Out How To Screw Ticketmaster?
Kevin Lyman is the co-founder of juggernaut tours like The Warped Tour and now The Rockstar Mayhem Festival and Taste of Chaos tours. He has come up with a solution, of sorts, to the growing Ticketmaster problem. We reported on the Ticketmaster problem here.
Here is a statement from Kevin about it:
"As many of you are aware, the media has been reporting the problems concert-goers are encountering buying tickets for Bruce Springsteen and other superstar acts, however I thought fans of our projects should know that until these large companies get their act together, the place to buy tickets will be through the official websites of the tours.
Right now we have the Rockstar Energy Drink Taste of Chaos Tour starting February 14th at the Hollywood Palladium and there are tickets available for all shows at this time at www.tasteofchaos.com. Click on the link by your city and you will be able to purchase tickets.
In the world of concert ticketing there have never been more players and people trying to provide this service, and hopefully one day they will get it right.”
Selling the tickets through the website is a great idea to stop Ticketmaster from getting their greedy hands on your connivance charges, building facility charges, and scalping the best seats. However, those tours still need Ticketmaster, as evidenced by the selling of tickets through Ticketmaster (link). And it has done nothing to curb the scalpers from getting the tickets and driving up cost. (link).
So what is the solution? I don't know, but selling the tickets directly through the website is a start. That will definitely make Ticketmaster obsolete. Also it would allow the tour to keep the money they make in service charges, which they might be able to use to pull in another act or get Lizard Man to drink Jagermeister on stage between acts.
One way to curb the scalpers might be to hold all tickets at the box office so that the purchaser has to show valid identification to get the tickets. Valid picture ID would be required to get the tickets and then an immediate escort into the arena would be given. This will ensure the tickets won't be passed off to the secondary buyer.
The problem with this solution is you will have to pay people more to be at the box office longer, because now instead of maybe 1,000 people coming to the box office, you have 22,000. So you have to open the box office earlier than two hours before the show. Also, the security detail will have to skip up to escort 22,000 people into the arena. So I don't see my solution being used, but I think it MIGHT curb the scalpers.
