What Makes a Good Cover Song?

When a band or artist decides to cover another band's song, they have a lot to think about. You want to do the original justice, but also add your own little twist on the song. This becomes even harder when the song is an iconic and defining song for a world respected band.

Take a look at this debacle as performed by Celine Dion. She completely murders AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long.

However, some bands can take a song by a respected band and make it fresh, new, and almost their own. Check out Van Halen's cover of The Kinks You Really Got Me. In this case, I prefer the Van Halen version to the original.

But even Van Halen lost their cover ability with the Martha & the Vandellas' classic Dancin' In The Streets. See below:

But I have found a band that constantly produces great cover songs tight roping between saving what made the original great and adding their own twist....the Foo Fighters.

Prince's Darling Nikki You will have to go to iTunes to listen to this cover because Prince pulled all of his music from YouTube. But it is a great cover.

Pink Floyd's Have A Cigar

Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street

Creed's With Arms Wide Open

Bottom line here is Dave Grohl is awesome and you are not.
