Exclusive Interview with Brian Quinn of Fosterchild
Fosterchild has gone through a lineup change just as they started working on their follow up to Independence Day. The band lost their bassist and drummer to Tantric. This would be enough to cripple any upstart band, but Fosterchild isn't just any band. They are from Philly and know how to fight and roll with the punches. They wouldn't let a little lineup change hold them back. So Danny Beissel (our interview with Danny is located here) and Brian Quinn remain together and focused as ever to put out a suitable follow up to their awesome first effort Independence Day.
We caught Brian Quinn outside of their show at West Chester's The Note last night. We only had a short time with him, so we maximized it by hitting him with the hard hitting questions you have all wanted to know. Check out our interview below:
BnR: What have you guys been up to since the Tantric tour?
Brian: As soon as we got off the road with those guys we had to get the bass and drum slots filled in. [Kevin Miller and Erik Leonhardt play in Tantric]. We got that done within a month of being home. We got my friend Bobby Pirylis, from my previous band Octane. We were in the band almost six years, he is playing drums with us now. And Mike who was in one of my first bands I was in when I moved to Philly back in the mid 90's. He is playing bass and both of those guys sing so that was the first order of business. We got them settled in and me and Danny have been writing since we got home. We have a ton of new material and getting ready to do the next record. We are a little nervous because Kevin [Miller] was the liaison between the band and the label. We didn't know where we stood with them. SMG [Silent Majority Group] and ILG [Independent Label Group] have been amazing to us..just staying with us and believing in us when it was only half a band. Those guys bailed pretty suddenly.
BnR: So the two new guys are permanent?
Brian: Yea, hopefully. [laughs] I'm hoping so. The other guys were permanent too.
BnR: You guys were tied pretty heavily to Tantric for a while [because of the sharing of Kevin and Erik].
Brian: Yea. I was happy for those guys and I knew it was an opportunity for them, but you can't serve two masters like that. One band always suffers. Those guys had the record going and the single and then they did a video. They had other things happening. We had to do what we had to do. We had to remove ourselves from that because there were a lot of things that were happening on their side that we got completely drug into the mud with. We had nothing to do with it. It was better off for everybody. I am happy for those guys. Kevin is definitely taking a hiatus and Erik is staying with Tantric. I wish them the best. I love them both.
BnR: As far as the new material is concerned, what is the dynamic? Is it just you and Danny?
Brian: Yea. That is what it has been since the beginning. With the new material, I will come up with riffs and then him and I'll sit in a writing session.
BnR: Is there any plan on that changing since the two new guys came in?
Brian: No. If it's not broken, we are not going to fix it. They write their parts. We will give them a rough skeleton of what I am working for this tempo or this kind of beat and that is that. But I want to give them at least the freedom to be creative. I don't want them to not be creative.
BnR: We spoke with Danny a few months back and he said one of his main influences was Chris Cornell. What about you?
Brian: I am a huge [Bob] Dylan fan. Generally when me and Danny are writing, especially for the records like the last one, Independence Day, we really concentrated, dug, and studied Sonic Temple by The Cult. Which is an album we absolutely love. Now this album and the last tour I think I listened to Appetite for Destruction four times a day. So just rock. That is all we want to do is just write good solid rock and get memorable hooks.
BnR: Other than the new album, what is on tap for you guys in '09? Any touring plans?
Brian: Yea we are going to be. There is no talk of that yet. The last few months is getting everything in place like the band. There is definitely going to be a tour.
BnR: The [Led] Zeppelin Cover [Immigrant Song] sounds fantastic. Is there any significance you picked that song?
Brian: It is just one we really dug. It is a really cool song and really fun to play Zeppelin at their rawest, as far as the production on that song. We like doing at least one cover. We are talking about maybe throwing in Nightrain or It's so Easy [both Guns N' Roses]. We were talking about doing Fire Woman or Sweet Soul Sister [both] by The Cult.
BnR: Metaphorically speaking, are you a Mac or a PC?
Brian: Probably PC.
BnR: What is your dream band to tour with ever?
Brian: Oh ever? The original Guns N' Roses lineup would be pretty awesome. If I had my choice now, I'd really like to get out and do some shows with The Cult. I know they are doing a new record. I'd love to get out and do a tour with those guys. Candlebox would be a good one. The list is massive. I don't know if there is enough ink in all the pens in the world to list the bands I'd want to tour with, especially the older cats.
BnR: Obviously you are a big GnR fan. One word to describe the new Chinese Democracy album?
Brian: I like it. One word to describe it? Singular. That is the best I can do.
BnR: I would have hyphenated Over-production.
Brian: That is interesting. A couple of the songs I heard, I dig. I am missing Izzy Stradlin's writing and Slash's playing. There is definitely an enormous void there. It's pretty cool.
BnR: You can't fill that with a thousand guitars.
Brian: No and there is a thousand guitars on that record.
BnR: Seen any good movies recently?
Brian: Yea, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. Marissa Tomei is half naked in it for most of it. I'm a huge Marissa Tomei fan. That is a good movie. The Dark Knight Returns was bad ass.
BnR: Any pranks you guys pulled on either Tantric or Framing Hanley?
Brian: We used to go on Framing Hanley's RV and light off fireworks.
BnR: Nixon told us you guys used to get him wrecked off vodka [Read our interview with Nixon here].
Brian: Oh yea. We got him off their RV one night and slipped in the back of our bus. He rode with us to Cincinnati or Texas. I don't know. But it was absolutely hilarious. We had a great time. I love those guys. I'm really happy they are doing well.
Thanks for talking with us Brian. We look forward to the new album and following tour. To keep up to date with Fosterchild, check out their MySpace page.
