Exclusive Interview with Josey Scott of Saliva
Following the success of Blood Stained Love Story, Saliva is ready to release their new album "Cinco Diablo" on to the unsuspecting public. Saliva is currently involved in a tour with Tantric, Drowning Pool, and Jet Black Stare, but after receiving an advance copy of Cinco Diablo, we had to speak with Josey Scott to understand more about the album.
BnR: Been a hard day there?
Josey: Yeah, it's been a hard one.
BnR: Where are you guys?
Josey: Huntsville, Alabama.
BnR: Are you recording a CD or getting ready for a tour?
Josey: We're on tour here.
BnR: I wanted to talk a little bit about the album, Cinco Diablo. What is the reason behind the name Cinco Diablo?
Josey: It's our fifth album. We wanted to do something that had to do with 5 and we think it is hilarious that people who aren't into rock and roll assume that bands like us are devil worshipers so we played off that. If you're a fan of our music and take the time to listen to our CD and lyrics you figure out that we're hardly devil worshipers.
BnR: On the album you have a song called "Southern Girls". Is that your answer to the Beach Boys "California Girls"?
Josey: Absolutely. I guarantee you I can find more hot bitches in the south than anywhere in the world. If you talk to the girls in California, ask them where they are from. Fuckin' 75% of them bitches are from the south. They moved there.
BnR: Who would your ideal southern girl be?
Josey: Ideal southern girl? I don't know, my wife's pretty fucking hot. I don't know...I'd have to brood on that one for a while.
BnR: So how was recording the album?
Josey: Well we spent a lot of time on the Blood Stained Love Story tour writing this record. Went in the studio with about 25 songs and it was tough to whittle them down to 10 or 11. I hate that part, that sucks. You have to make some songs B-Sides and movie soundtracks. It is like telling your kids they can't go to the fair.
BnR: You're obviously on tour with Jet Black Stare and Tantric. How's that going?
Josey: It's going real good. We're really good friends with Tantric and we're getting to know Jet Black Stare. They're canucks, but they're cool.
BnR: Has the crowd reaction been great for you guys?
Josey: Yeah, it's been great man. We're playing a lot of the new material, two or three songs every night. A lot of packed houses. It's going really well.
BnR: At the end of tours, lots of bands like to prank each other. What was your best prank, that Saliva pulled off.
Josey: After the show, we all take our buses to the hotel so everybody can shower and freshen up. At the end of the tour, we had our driver become good friends with Drowning Pool's driver. So we let them all get in the hotel and left. It has to be something drastic like that. You can't just silly string them on stage. It has to be something awful.
BnR: Are you planning something for Jet Black Stare?
Josey: Oh yeah. We're gonna steal their van and leave nothing but hockey pucks or hockey sticks.
BnR: Speaking of Jet Black Stare, they've recently worked with the WWE. You guys have worked exclusively with the WWE on a number of things. That must have been great for building your fanbase.
Josey: Yeah, we've had a long standing relationship with those guys. Jim Johnston who does the music direction there is a good friend. I think we've written the intro song for almost every wrestler they have except for Triple H, who is an exclusive Motorhead guy. He's the last one in line, but we'll get him.
BnR: Speaking of Motorhead, you guys have toured with numerous big acts like Aerosmith and Kiss. Who was your favorite to tour with?
Josey: Well you hit the nail on the head right out of the gate. Aerosmith and Kiss have been my favorite ones. I'd still like to tour with AC/DC though, they are my favorite band of all time.
BnR: Anything with Nickelback?
Josey: (laughing) Probably not.
BnR: Well that kind of segways into our next question. I remember Spiderman coming out and that song with you and Chad (Kroeger) was everywhere. That must have been really big for your career, monetarily and exposure wise. Care to elaborate any further on that?
Josey: Yeah, it was really good for my career. I have no regrets when it comes to that. I enjoyed doing that song with him and I got a lot of miles out of it. I appreciate anything like that that comes along my way.
BnR: Did you write any of that?
Josey: That was all Chad.
BnR: That's too bad, because I enjoyed your voice better than Chad's.
Josey: (laughing) Thank you.
BnR: What type of cars do you own? What's your favorite one?
Josey: A '69 Cadillac limosuine. I wanted it just like the King had it. It's got plush blue velvet seats in the back. That's enough for me.
BnR: Speaking of collaborations, you got to work with Nikki Sixx. How was that?
Josey: Nikki's my idol. If I could pick one rock star that is the embodiment of what I want to be, it would be Nikki. Working with him was a dream come true. He wrote "Rest in Pieces" and did the video. He's a really cool guy and a good friend.
BnR: Now that you're on tour, do you find a lot of time to write music?
Josey: I think the trick to it is you can't force it. You gotta go where the music takes you and you have to get out of the song's way. Elvis said one time that the music was through him and not from him, he just had the best seat in the house.
BnR: When do you think you'll have another album?
Josey: Probably at the end of this tour. We don't like down time. We're bus rats.
BnR: What's been your favorite song to perform live on this tour?
Josey: "My Own Worst Enemy"
BnR: What's been your favorite city to play in?
Josey: Milwaukee, WI and Buffalo, NY. Nashville and Memphis are big towns for us. Florida and Texas are real big.
BnR: One of our favorite bands is Nashville Pussy. Are you into those guys?
Josey: Yeah we met those guys a couple of years ago. I remember I bought some of their merchandise.
BnR: Was it the Nashville Pussy beltbuckle?
Josey: No, I bought a poster and a couple of T-Shirts.
BnR: If you were a member of the A-Team, which member would you be?
Josey: B.A. Baracus
BnR: Cause you're an enforcer or because you want to be black?
Josey: I just want to be black.
BnR: Just so you can walk around with that mohawk and those chains?
Josey: That's right.....and possibly have a big dick.
BnR: I'm sure the southern girls would love that.
Josey: Hell Yeah.
BnR: Is there anything else you'd like to promote while we're on the phone with you?
Josey: Our reality show that's possibly coming out is called "Hick Parade". We're shopping that to networks now. It's looking like it's gonna fly, so it's gonna be pretty cool.
BnR: Well they put Tommy Lee Goes to College on TV so I think yours sounds better than that.
Josey: Yeah, no shit.
BnR: The album comes out next week, right?
Josey: December 16th.
BnR: Have a good night
Josey: You too brother.

Saliva had their time in the sun and cranked out the hits that made them a top contender in modern rock territory, but there comes a time when we all need change. What Saliva created on this new album is terribly cliche and unimaginative for anyone to bother.
I Hyped Saliva on Everhype and gave it 36% which I think is fairly accurate.

I wouldn’t mind getting some opinions on it . If you get on there, rate me a 5 & request friendship.
