Exclusive Interview with Rich Luzzi of Rev Theory

Vic Wettner watches wrestling religiously. He gets antsy 15 minutes prior to the start of Monday Night Raw and Friday Night Smackdown. He orders the Pay Per Views and he sometimes prances around in a weenie bender pretending to be Victor H. Hemsley (VHH).

He first heard about the band Rev Theory when they provided the entrance music to Randy Orton. So he set out finding contact information for the band and we finally got the opportunity to talk to Rich Luzzi, lead singer, of the band mere hours before he took the stage at the Atlantic City stop of 2008's Jagermeister tour. (Read our review of the show here).

BnR:
How has the tour been going for you guys? The Jagermeister tour?

Rich: It has been great. The shows have been awesome. All of the bands have been great. The crew has been great. It has been a lot of fun so far.

BnR: Are you doing lots of Jager?

Rich: Yea too much.

BnR: What has been your favorite city so far?

Rich: Salt Lake City was pretty amazing. Vegas was good. There have been a couple. They all have different elements. They have been really good shows.

BnR: What makes Salt Lake City stand out to you?

Rich: Our record was number one there on three different stations. Our fanbase, our single, and us as a band was through the roof. That always makes for a good show.

BnR: Let's talk about the record for a little bit. Obviously the fans in Salt Lake have received it well, but how about the rest of the United States?

Rich: So far it's been pretty good. We can't complain. NASCAR just picked up Hell Yeah for the '09 season. The NFL Network is using three of our songs for Thursday night football. Carls Jr did a huge campaign with Coca Cola. We are pretty happy with the record and our singles have been received well. The WWE used Light It Up as the theme song for Wrestlemania this past year. I think it has been a pretty good run so far.

BnR: What was the inspiration behind Light It Up?

Rich: I think what happened on this record is we had a lot of time from our last record to this one to just experience life and what it is like to be on the road. We have had great relationships, lost relationships, lost loved ones, had some great parties. I just think overall there was just a lot of life experiences to pull from for this record. We went back to our early influences, stuff we grew up listening to that made us really want to play music. Such as Guns N' Roses, STP [Stone Temple Pilots], Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Metallica.

BnR: The girl on the front cover, who is that girl? Was she actually on fire?
Rev Theory Light It Up Album Cover

Rich:
No she wasn't actually on fire [laughs] She is a model that we cast and she did a great job. We feel like it turned out to be a really great cover.

BnR:
It is definitely one of the more interesting covers and one of the coolest looking covers I have seen on an album this year. The video for "Hell Yeah" premiered on Xbox Live making it the first ever music video premiere on Xbox Live. Did Microsoft approach you?

Rich:
We had a great relationship with the people over at Xbox and we were trying to figure out how to work with them. Collectively we came up with that idea. It became a really great tool for us because it opened up all the gamers. And the gamers are fanatics. It was a pretty cool experience to be put on that and exposed us to a lot of new fans.

BnR:
Speaking of gamers, have you played Guitar Hero or Rock Band?

Rich:
Yea we have played both. Most of us are really horrible at it.

BnR:
When you provided the entrance theme music for Randy Orton of the WWE, did you get a chance to meet Randy?

Rich:
Yea, we met Randy. Since we worked with the WWE before and we did the theme song for Wrestlemania, we got to go to Wrestlemania and perform down there. We got to go to Monday Night Raw. So we got to meet a lot of wrestlers, Randy Orton, Batista, Ric Flair, you name them we met them. They were all really nice guys. The organization on a whole was just a class act. They treat their wrestlers great, they treat anyone who works with the organization great. I was really amazed at how well the company was run and how great they treated everybody.

BnR:
You got to meet Batista. Is he as scary as he looks on tv?

Rich:
He is gigantic.

BnR:
Did the WWE approach you for the Wrestlemania theme song?

Rich:
That was another avenue between our label and our management. They had a working relationship with the WWE and we serviced them with the record. The WWE loved the record and chose Light It Up off the record to be the theme song for Wrestlemania.

BnR:
One of my dreams is to see Wrestlemania live in person. So that must have been pretty cool for you guys?

Rich:
It was pretty cool. You don't really understand how big of a culture that is until you go to something like that. It was at the Citrus Bowl and they packed out 76,000 people, which is more than the Rolling Stones did there.

BnR:
What was it like playing to that crowd?

Rich:
It was pretty awesome. The awareness of our band was huge throughout that community because of all the promotional stuff that they did in the week prior. It was a great show.

BnR:
For those who haven't seen your live show, can you explain it to people?

Rich:
That is one of the things we pride ourselves on is our live show. You come to see us play and you are going to get entertained. Chance are you are going to leave exhausted just watching us. It is intense from the time we start until the time we finish. We want to give a show. One of the biggest things I can't stand is going to watch a band and them just standing there on stage and relying on the lights and everything else to be the show. If I really wanted to listen to this band I would just put it [the album] in my car.

BnR:
What is on the horizon for you guys after the Jagermeister tour?

Rich:
This one takes us right up until about Christmas. We are going to have to take off for the holidays. We may be playing a show on New Years Eve. That is in the works now. Then we are working on our new year. We have a bunch of different things in the works. There is nothing finalized yet, but it should be becoming final in the next week or so.

BnR:
Do you have any material for another album?

Rich:
No, not yet. We just literally spent a year on this record. It just came out in June. We have just been focusing and playing the music and enjoying being back on the road.

BnR:
I was reading some of your influences, Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue, Metallica, but they are all from America. Who is your favorite European band?

Rich:
I don't know. I never really given it much thought. I never classified a band being from a different region, country, or world.

BnR:
So you don't see Motorhead as a German band?

Rich:
I don't. I have never ever really thought about a band being from a different part of the world. We actually might be playing with Motorhead at a festival next year.

BnR:
Are you a Mac or a PC?

Rich:
Either or. I switch back and forth.

BnR:
Are you a comic book fan?

Rich:
No.

BnR:
But you have seen X-Men?

Rich:
Of course, I loved the movies. I was a huge Superman fan, Batman, and of course, the X-Men movies. But I never got into the actual comic books.

BnR: Wolverine
has super healing ability. Do you think he could cure himself from an STD?

Rich:
[laughs] If he can, give me his number. I am just kidding.

BnR:
That is a question that has been bugging me since I started reading the comics. I can't figure it out.

Rich:
I am going to go with probably yes. If he has healing ability, I am going to go with yes.

BnR:
Does he cure it 100% or is he just a carrier for the disease?

Rich:
No he cures it 100%.

BnR:
Which member of the A-Team are you?

Rich:
I'd like to say I am a little bit Mr. T, B.A. Baracus. I think I have qualities of all of them, good looking, strong, smart, pretty much the perfect package.

BnR:
So you are, yourself, a one man A-Team.

Rich:
Yea, I am a one man A-Team. Bring it on.

Thanks goes out to Rich Luzzi who took time to talk with us, but damn you Rich! Your answer to the A-Team is so perfect we now have to stop asking it. No one can top that answer. You can hear our exclusive interview with Rich at this location. (MyPodcast) Be sure to check out Rev Theory on the remaining dates of the Jagermeister tour.
