Songs That Sound Like Other Songs
Let's face it, it is hard to write songs that are original and not a complete rip off or homage to a band that has come before you. It is hard to find original cord progression when you are influenced by a certain band. If I am influenced by The Clash, you are going to hear a lot of their music in mine...and so on.
With that being said, here are songs that sound eerily similar to older songs. Note, the challenge on this was to find bands and match ups that were not sued for being a total rip off. That excludes Vanilla Ice for his stealing of Ice Ice Baby from Queen and David Bowie's Under Pressure.
Green Day's Walking Contradiction vs The Kinks Do It Again
Green Day's Brain Stew vs Chicago's 25 or 6 to 4
Santana Smooth vs Dio Rainbow in the Dark
Corey Hart's Sunglasses at Night vs Eurythmics Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
John Mellancamp's R.O.C.K in the U.S.A. vs The Romantics What I Like About You
Nickelback vs Themselves

A while back we ran the Blogs N Roses: "Songs That Sound Like Other Songs" Segments. Here are parts 1, 2, and 3. We should have put Joe Satriani's "If I Could Fly" and Coldplay's Viva La Vida on there. Well that was so similiar that Joe Satriani is now suing Coldplay for ripping him off. He has a great case because the melody and chords (as the video says) are exactly the same. The only way Coldplay doesn't have to pay up is if they can show that Joe ripped it off from somebody else. Does that mean Joe ... -
