The Statues of Liberty Review – October 4th, 2008 at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City
Our lives have not been the same since June 21st, 2008. That was of course the day that we saw The Statues of Liberty live for the first time. The only way to describe the experience is to say that we were like the naïve new “fish” in prison....ever so fresh. We were walking around in the cafeteria, just trying to get our chipped beef and Orange drink. All of a sudden, a large alpha male named Moose threw us to the ground and informed us that we will soon be his new blushing girlfriend. At first we were scared, but after getting to know Moose, we realized that this was a great situation for all parties involved. Okay, it wasn't quite the same as being some dudes prison-pussy, but we were definitely caught off guard and afterwards completely enthralled by this band.
Fomerly known as Banana Fish Zero, these guys and gal are an interesting lineup to say the least. John Law leads the group as the guitarist and vocalist. Just as interesting as his guitar playing and lyrics are his mime-dancing and hand gestures. Hitomi is a petite drummer who doesn't even look like she can pick up the drumsticks but she absolutely destroys the set when she's up there. Honestly, she is completely mesmerizing. Rounding out the group is the man, the myth and the legend, his royal highness Prince Hal of New York City. At approximately 8'9”, Hal is quite the site. He is truly a gentle giant until the show starts. The man abuses the bass like Lenny from “'Of Mice and Men” does to a small bunny rabbit.
Our question going into the performance was whether or not the second time around would be as awesome for us or......would it be awesomer? We have been listening to their music all summer since our first exposure to them, but the first time we were completely caught with our pants down and you simply can't replicate that experience. As soon as the music started we knew for a fact that we would not be disappointed. The performance was even more fun this time around. They played all of our favorites: "Eye To Eye", "Sex and Cigarettes", "Crushing", Cholcolate Cake", etc.. They also mixed in some of their BFZ hits such as: "We Got the Right" and "Fire". The band has actually gotten better in the last 4 months. They opened up guns blazing playing three songs right off the bat. It is an unforgiving style of rock/punk that takes no prisoners. This group isn't about wasting your time on stage. If you paid for an hour, you get an hour...no questions about it. If you ever have a chance to see this group, do it! I guarantee that you won't be disappointed.
We hope to have many more experiences with The Statues of Liberty in the near future.
I highly recommend that you check out their MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/statuesofliberty. Also, please check out our first review of them here.
This picture was procured from the band's Myspace page. Though it was not from the Bowery Ballroom show, Hal was wearing the same shirt!.....that, and you can't beat John's shorts in this photo!
