The Dirty Pearls Review – October 4th, 2008 at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City
The first time that we saw The Dirty Pearls live was at the El Bar in Philadelphia in April. The next day, they performed at a mall in Delaware. Since then, we have had the distinct pleasure of watching them grow, playing bigger and bigger venues month after month. This past summer, they took a hiatus to work on some stuff individually, but the entire time, lead singer Tommy London kept the band at the front of everybody's mind with his text messages, myspace messages, and emails. He said that something bigger was coming, and he was right.
We at Blogs N' Roses wanted to help promote this show any way that we could. At first a large bustrip was thought to be the way, but with gas prices as high as they were, it was hard to secure a bus that wouldn't bankrupt us. Finally we got together with Tommy and drove as much traffic as we could to the ticket sales link using the most valuable advertising real estate on Blogs N' Roses. We also gave away a set of tickets to the show.
The Bowery Ballroom is a legendary venue and we are very happy for the Pearls. They always put on a great show, and this night was no different. You can tell that they are all coming into their own. The infamous Marty E. came out before the show in a glorious red robe and boxers, not to mention a ski cap and sunglasses. During drum rehearsals I almost caught a shot of his balls, but luckily Bob Wettner was in my line of sight. Marty did however change for the show and was all business as usual. Dougie complemented Marty and rounded out the rythym section perfectly. Richie and Johnny B. are always great to watch. When a band has not one, but two excellent lead guitar players, it is very special. Then there is Tommy...
Tommy has been spending a lot of time promoting this show. Anybody who is on a mailing list, facebook, myspace, or in his cell phone contact list will attest to this fact. The man believes in this band and rightfully so. This show was about their success in packing the Bowery Ballroom with people amped up to see them. Like a bride to be, Tommy didn't show his face until the first lick. His adoring, doe-eyed fans packed the house to show their love for him, and he enjoyed every minute of it. They reacted well to the Pearls' new songs. One track, Ventilator Avenue is an instant classic, and I look forward to hearing it in my car shortly. All of the classics were played. (in no particular order) Happy New Year, Sucker for a Sequel, Cannonball, Rockstarlivin', Don't Blame my Rock N' Roll, Bruises, LuvSikLuv, Black and White Movies, and more. They closed the set with a cover of the Led Zeppelin classic Rock and Roll.
We look forward to whatever The Dirty Pearls have in store for us next. We expect an announcement soon about something taking place at the end of the month, before the guys head to the west coast for some dates in San Diego and Hollywood.
