Better Without You Seriously... EP Review

We get a few requests to review this EP or that LP. We cycle through the crap to bring you bands we either like or feel have a legitimate shot at fucking your kid sister. It is a courtesy we like to call "The Big Band and Kid Sister Watch." Sometimes, there is a band that can actually do both! I am looking at you Tressels and Von Hayes!

Anyway, we got this thinly veiled email asking us to check out this new band in Philadelphia because they are going to be big. It came from "Brandon," who I later deduced was the drummer for the band. I didn't spend that summer dodging the FBI for killing my best friend in high school because he liked Creed, and not learn a few detective tricks.

Well I am a sucker for marketing (typed on my iPhone), so I had to check out this "next big thing." I received the Seriously...EP from Better Without You out through Criminal Records.

The band's MySpace site doesn't say who plays what in the band, but I think I figured it out. If you are a member of the band, feel free to correct me. I don't have the last names of each member (thanks to the sparse MySpace), so I am going to use the A-Team to fill in the gaps. Brandon "Murdock" is the drummer, Myles "Hannibal" is the bassist, and Ryan "Face" is the heart breakingly attractive frontman who plays guitar. (KID SISTER ALERT 1).

I can't say for sure if Ryan plays the guitar or if Myles plays both bass and guitar. Myles strikes me as the kind of guy with fast fingers and the talent to play both instruments on stage. (KID SISTER ALERT 2).

My iTunes imported the songs as singles so I have no idea the intended order of these songs. I took a quick listen to them and this is essentially a three song EP with a live track. The live track is acoustic and sounds like a promising track, but it needs a better recording wrapped around it. However, the other three tracks are solid pop punk.

The first track I listened to was You're Going Down (Not in the Good Way) (KID SISTER ALERT 3). This track starts out with a simple vocal and no music as Better Without You states a simple problem, "You talk like you know just what I am thinking." The lyrics attempt to solve this basic problem between miscommunication while weaving between catchy pop punk guitar hooks and lyrical hooks. The bass and drums are pounding through this song and damn this song's bass line! It is so throbbing it made me perform no less than 13 pelvic thrusts. (KID SISTER ALERT 4). I actually had this song stuck in my head for a full day later and it invaded my dreams. This song is made for radio right now.

The next song I listened to was Cutting Ties. This song showcases Ryan's vocal range a bit, but he still keeps it in the punk genre. By that I mean, he doesn't feel the need to hit extended long notes like some American Idol cast off. The vocals are never over powering and gel well with the music. Damn if Better Without You hasn't crafted another catchy pop punk song. I can see this being played on the iPod docks of the teenagers (KID SISTER ALERT 5) and adults enjoying this as well.

The next song I listened to was, From Start to Finish. This is an acoustic live track and it is probably a song that shouldn't have been included on the EP. The poor recording quality stands in my way of determining if this song is any good. I'll give the band the benefit of the doubt, but the song stands polar opposite of the better recorded songs on the EP.

The final song on the EP was The Long Drive. This song showcases the band's influences — Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Taking Back Sunday, and Green Day to an extent. It rolls through a quieter choral sing along portion, plods into the catchy chorus, tingles through the B part, falls into a guitar solo, and finally concludes with a sped up redeux of the chorus, with added lyrics. It is another great pop punk song crafted by a young, talented band.

I migrated these songs to my iPod where they will play along side classics like Black Sabbath, Lamb of God and your mother. (KID SISTER ALERT 6) I will make sure to check out Better Without You live and report on their show. If they can back up these songs with a solid live show, they can have our sister Melissa Wettner.

Go and pay for the album from the band's MySpace site. If you don't want to pay for the album, there are two options. Fellate the band for the EP. It's a good EP and worth it. But if you don't want to put a cock in your mouth, the band is giving away the album for free on October 28, 2008 on their MySpace site. The choice is yours, but the bottom line is you need Seriously...EP.

Wow this band should suck your dicks for writing this awesome review for them.

I guess it was too hardcore for them as they are not promoting the review at all on any of their sites. A big mistake on their part.
