Smashing Pumpkins Release New Single Through Guitar Hero World Tour
The Smashing Pumpkins will release their new single "G.L.O.W" exclusively through Guitar Hero World Tour. The new song was recorded exclusively for the franchise.
The song will be released after the launch of Guitar Hero World Tour (October 26, 2008). G.L.O.W. will be released as part of a three song track pack which also includes 1979 and The Everlasting Gaze.
I think you will see this more and more; artists releasing singles exlusively for either Rock Band or Guitar Hero. Motley Crue did this with their single "The Saints of Los Angeles" and they sold more on Rock Band than iTunes or Amazon. Metallica is releasing Death Magnetic for Guitar Hero 3 on the same day the album hits stores.
Rock Band and Guitar Hero are helping to morph and change the current record industry. The record companies are having trouble finding a new buisness model that takes into account new technology (downloading sites, bit torrents, etc) and also trying to find a way to make money.
Trent Reznor recently talked to Pierre Robert from WMMR and he discussed his reasons giving his art away for free. Reznor says that the reason the record industry is in the situation it is in right now is because of how they [record companies] treated artists. He said that the janitor was higher up on the chain than he was as a recording artist because at least the janitor was paid for his work. Reznor was not. It is a great insightful interview I suggest you check out. You can find it here.
