Review of Jet Black Stare - In This Life

From the first guitar run of "Ready To Roll" you get the impression that Jet Black Stare might be able to give you a decent rock record.  In an industry that has been utterly devoid of ballsy rockers as of late, we'll basically take what we can get.  "In This Life" does give the casual listener a nice mix of hard and soft rockers that will be sure to stay in your rotation for at least a few weeks, but won't lose its catchiness three months later either.

The verses and chorus of "Ready To Roll" somehow combines the chugging guitar style of any number of modern rock bands with vocals reminiscent of Don Henley

The rhythm section is able to keep up with the fine tuned precision of the guitars.  You can tell that the band didn't phone in their recording sessions as they are a tight package.  The guitar solos aren't overly decadent, but achieve their purpose, which is to enhance the songs.  Vocally, singer Rod Black is definitely above average.  He shows incredible range in the song "In This Life".  It almost catches you by surprise after getting your ass kicked during the first two tracks.  As the album progresses, you almost wish for a few heavier songs, but it is hard to tell whether the band enjoys softer music, or got pressure from the powers that be.  One way or another, we will be eager to see what they have in store for us in the near future.

As we have seen in the past with bands such as Shinedown and Disturbed, Jet Black Stare has gotten past the first test.  They have put out a consistent album.  If they tour diligently and continue to write quality music, they have a chance to be among the new generation of the rock elite.

Last Tuesday, I had the pleasure of going to the Grand Ballroom at the Regency Center in San Francisco to see Shinedown with Red and Jet Black Stare. The show was quite the steal at $20, especially considering that it was pretty easy to get up close to the stage and see the bands - practically within cock-groping distance! The place sort of felt like a high school prom (definitely had the high school gym feeling) except the only babies being thrown in trash cans were ... those, um ... yeah this joke is going nowhere.
