Buckcherry Proves My Point

Sometimes when a band is owned by the internet, I can sit back and laugh. When that band is Buckcherry, I laugh even harder.

Buckcherry's latest single was "leaked" on BitTorrent. When the band found out about this "leak" they issued a press release condemning the leak. The press release was later removed, but thank to the internet, you can view it here. Cached Press Release

"Honestly, we hate it when this shit happens, because we want our FANS to have any new songs first."

Take a look at the press release. It issues more about the band and the current album than addressing the leak. This lead a lot of people to believe that the leak actually came from the band themselves in order to promote the new album and garner large amounts of publicity. So people much smarter than I, traced the leak.

A BitTorrent insider helped a website trace the leak, because the BitTorrent site is not supposed to be abused like this. The insider confirmed the IP address of the user who uploaded the file to BitTorrent.

The IP address was traced to a New York resident and he only uploaded one track, the Buckcherry single. So the website used a wiki-scanner (http://wikiscanner.virgil.gr/) and the person edited the Buckcherry wikipedia entry and added the name of the band's manager to another page.

So the website decided to contact the band's manager, Josh Klemme, who lives in New York, to confirm the site's suspicion. His IP address was the same as the uploader. OOPS!

This only confirms my rant earlier, that more bands are starting to give away their music for free as long as it drives publicity and bodies to the shows. It looks like Buckcherry has helped confirm what I already knew. I only hope "Your Boss" is watching this unfold.
