Thunders died in 1991 of what is said to be a drug overdose. But the New Orleans coroner said that the amount of drugs in his system should not have been fatal. His room was torn apart, and his passport, clothes, and makeup were stolen. The ransacking of the room led to a few theories of foul play due to the company he was keeping at the end of his life.
