Crue Fest Review and Setlist Philadelphia 7-12-2008

It is a hot and sunny day here in Philadelphia. It feels like God has thrown a wool blanket over the Tri-State area, you can barely breathe from the oppressive heat. But who cares this is CRUE FEST at the Susquehanna Bank Center! A day of merry mayhem and debauchery like the Crue used to have back on the Sunset Strip.

The crowd is already drinking at 2:00pm and some have been in the parking lot since 11am preparing for a 5:00 show. The crowd is certainly a more attractive bunch than the typical Camden festival brings. Generally, the crowd is full of beer swilling, rough hooligans ready to kick ass than listen to hard rock music. However, this crowd seems more ready for a rocking orgy and ready to let the main stage bands provide the sexual soundtrack.

First band up is Trapt. They heavily promote their upcoming CD release Only Through the Pain due out on August 5, 2008. But their live show has left something to be desired. Our contact at the show said "typical opening band." This means that they are boring. He said that they really didn't provide much energy and the crowd wasn't really into them. To be honest, no one has really been into them since 2002 and even then they weren't really into them.

**6:30 Update**

SIXX:A.M just left the stage and they kicked ass. An awesome set as the band rifled through 3/4 of their album. SIXX:A.M had a good mix of songs alternating between the slower ones and faster ones found on the album. They were more engaging than Trapt and certainly had the crowd behind them.

The crowd started to fill out the venue to see SIXX:A.M. It was obviously one of the bands the crowd paid money to see. The stage set was minimal with only a banner of the band's album art behind them. They closed out their 30-minute set with Life Is Beautiful. Nikki Sixx may or may not have played the keyboards on a few of the songs, where Lars Wettner was sitting it was tough for him to see. So let's just extrapolate and say, Nikki played the keyboards.

**7:30 Update**

Papa Roach just finished up their set and Lars Wettner was impressed. This man, Lars, has seen his fair share of bands in his day and Papa Roach impressed him. He said the band had excellent stage presence and a blistering set of their radio friendly hits and a couple of new songs. If you have heard the song on the radio, you will hear it live. Jacoby was in his usual regalia of black pants, black shirt, tie and was able to get the crowd very much behind the performance. Some pits even broke out during the closer Last Resort. The stage design was similar to what it has been all day with a banner behind the band promoting the next album.

The crowd is continuing to filter into the venue still getting ready for Buckcherry and Motley Crue. People are antsy and drunk. They are chanting CRUE! CRUE! CRUE! As each band plays the crowd becomes more and more ready for the shows namesake and headliner.

Because I am an idiot and can't figure out how to add two podcasts in one post. I am linking you to Lars' thoughts on the band. You can find them here.

**8:40 Update**

Buckcherry killed on stage. They had everyone dancing from the fans, the non-fans, and even security dancing in the aisles. It was an awesome setlist ending in Crazy Bitch. Josh Todd pranced and jumped around on stage and whipped the crowd into a sleazy, booze-fueled dervish. If the fans were not ready for the Crue, they certainly are now.

The stage set-up has been similar for all the other bands with Buckcherry's new album cover, Black Butterfly, behind them. They had a solid mix of old songs and a couple off the new record. Lars seems to believe the new album shows promise.

Crue Fest seems to be crescendoing with each new band upping the ante and topping the previously played band. The only band left to bring the house down is Motley Crue.

**11:15 Update**

Motley Crue came out kicking, literally and figuratively speaking. The band started their raucous set with Kickstart My Heart. The band didn't waste anytime as they raced into their hits Wild Side and Shout at the Devil.

Pyro burst around the four original members, Vince Neil in a cliché Cruefest shirt, Mick Mars in his typical top hat and black wardrobe, Tommy in the shortest shorts man has ever made, but long enough to cover his immense third leg, and Nikki in an industrial inspired outfit.

The set was a Los Angeles inspired design with the city named written backward. A notable Motley Crue antic that is missing this tour: the Tommy Lee drum solo. It might be due to time restrictions, but Mr. Lee did not subject the crowd to an insane drum solo. I must say, thank god.

The Motley Crue Setlist:

01. Kickstart My Heart
02. Wild Side
03. Shout at the Devil
04. Saints of Los Angeles *
05. Live Wire
06. Mutherfucker of the Year
07. Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)
08. Same Ol' Situation
09. Primal Scream
10. Looks that Kill
11. Girls Girls Girls
12. Dr. Feelgood

Encore

13. Home Sweet Home

All in all the day was a fantastic one. This is a rock show that must be seen for any fans of the band. It comes highly recommended by Lars Wettner.

Lars discusses the day and the Motley Crue set.

Ok, I agree with most of what you said although I missed Sixx A.M. and I'm angry because of it. Dude, you totally forgot (and I don't know how you could) that there were two major Motley gaffes. They added Sick Love Song to the set but Mick Mars jacked it the first time around. I originally thought that it was a rearrangement with minimal guitar and was going to kick in full. Turns out Mick must have forgotten his parts. The song made it close to the solo and they just stopped. Vince said "I tried to keep it going as long as I could!" and Mick followed up with "Sorry, I guess I'm the motherfucker of the year!" They laughed and started it from the beginning and it came off great. Then Tommy did his "Tit E. Cam" thing with a video intro that was hilarious with him going backstage to get the camera. He goes to Tit E's dressing room which is actually the ladies room and Tit E. is partying with a martini and 4-6 nude women. He tells him they have a show and he brings out the camera and boobies are flying out left and right (pun intended!). Then Tommy accidentally pulls the cable out of the camera and everything went blank! He tries to fix it and up on the big screens pops "Please set date and time." Tommy kept trying to fix it but eventually handed it to the tech and said "Dude, get it going again" and it was back online. After the next song Vince laughingly said "Even we fuck up too!" Great show as Motley always is. It was weird not seeing some of the staples like "Too Young To Fall In Love" and "Red Hot", etc., but great nonetheless. I would rather have seen them close with "Saints of Los Angeles but hey, their the Crue and it "Doesn't matter what you think, they're gonna do it anyway!"

Another highlight for me was Kat Von D. walking right past me. Like Nikki doesn't have enough already! She's just as hot in person and Nikki truly is one of the luckiest bastards on the planet!

Thanks for the feedback. Please note that our very own Lars Wettner was probably just drunk out of his mind and didn't notice everything.

As for Tommy not being able to figure out the camera, are you really surprised? I'm surprised the guy can figure out text messaging.
