If I was Fifteen Years Younger and a Woman...

In a moment of supreme coincidence or cosmic convergence, I decided to watch the Van Halen backstage footage from the US Festival in '83. And just my luck, the US Festival took place Memorial Day weekend, exactly 25 years ago, so you bastards get something to look at today.

Preeminent rock historians (and Vince Neil) consider the US Festival to be the watershed moment for popular acoustics in the 1980s. In simpler terms, metal would set the tone for the remainder of the decade and A Flock of Seagulls only appeared when you ate fries at the beach. It was supposed to be the Woodstock of the '80s, but as you will see, the hideous pulsing mulleted ocean of people would make anyone wax sentimental about Altamont. The metal day lineup was quite fearsome by anyone's standards. Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Triumph (the only weak link), The Scorpions, Van Halen. As usual, Motley Crue were dressed impeccably, even in the blistering heat.

Van Halen received 1.5 million dollars to headline the festival. I'd call that a deal, they don't make 'em like they used to.

Motley Crue made a rare daylight appearance, witness "Live Wire" from that glorious day.

And for your bonus video, David Lee Roth's "Yankee Rose."
