The Joke Is On You, Pal

Listening to five thousand meatheads singing along with the Stone Temple Pilots got me thinking. Its rather odd and ironic when a group of strange outcasts, girly men and weirdos get their songs on the radio and suddenly are accepted by the intolerant, painfully normal, homophobic white trash asshole set. If an unknown Scott Weiland walked in a bar with that three piece suit, these buffoons would clearly lynch him on sight or at least attempt to burn him at the stake. But with proper marketing, this freak becomes their hero.

Its never a good idea to trash your fan base, even if it is the typical American moron or the fray boy tools who buy albums because it's fucking cool. Give those bastards some autographs and at least you can write some songs about how they don't get it. G.I. Joe said "knowing is half the battle," and without further ado, here are three bands who knew the score.

Nirvana, "In Bloom."
Kurt Cobain followed the punk aesthetic of low-fi abrasive noises and copping the outsider attitude. Here's Kurts take on the fan who doesn't get it.

The Sex Pistols - anything from The Great Rock N Roll Swindle
The Pistols did exactly what they had to do on the self-consciously horrible soundtrack to their self-consciously horrible film The Great Rock N Roll Swindle; release an album of crap knowing that it would sell. I still contend that "Who Killed Bambi" is the worst song recorded by humans to date. It's even worse than the sham-disco track, "The Black Arabs." Since I couldn't find a decent video of either, here's one of the hits.

Last and not least, my favorite. Rage Against The Machine's "No Shelter" from the Godzilla soundtrack. It beats the fuck out of other soundtrack shit-boxes like "Don't Want to Miss a Thing" since Rage mock the movie, faceless commercialism and store-bought rebellion. Besides, even the most die-in-the-wool capitalist will admit that Godzilla sucked a fat one and really had this coming. Witness the live version from the Tibetan Freedom Concert since the record pimps have disabled the official videos.

Who wrote this post? I know it wasn't Joe Wettner because he doesn't listen to any music prior to 1985, when David Lee Roth left Van Halen.

But your point is valid. Could you see David Johansen at a Dave Matthews Band concert?

In defense of myself, I am exposed to music recorded after the DLR/VH split. In hindsight I should have concluded "Star, Star" since it is the ultimate song about fans.
