Stone Temple Pilots Review and Setlist May 18 2008
Leading up to the MMR-B-Q at the Susquehanna Bank Center on May 18, it was unclear if Scott Weiland was going to front the reunited Stone Temple Pilots. Scott ran into some legal troubles and was supposed to do eight days in a correctional facility. Technically, he only spent 40 minutes or so in jail and was released. However, I think he is still in jail and David Bowie fronted Stone Temple Pilots last night.
Scott always looked like David Bowie, but more so last night. He wore a gray suit and red fedora, which is a far cry from his Velvet Revolver lazy rockstar look.
It was great to see the DeLeo brothers back with their own band. It is great to see. I thought the band was going to come out kicking ass, start the set with something rocking like Crackerman to show the crowd Stone Temple Pilots are back. They fooled me though as they started the set with the slower, Big Empty. Wicked Garden followed and the band sounded polished and clean, almost as if they never stopped playing with each other. The band looked great and sounded even better.
I always seem to find the ultimate asshole fan that thinks the band is a jukebox. Every time there is a lull in the action on stage, this intellectual giant yells for the most obscure song that even the band has forgotten they wrote. He continued to yell for a song off of Shangri-La De Da, which the band really doesn't like. They played only one song off that album and it was Coma. But this idiot continued to yell for his favorite song from Big Empty all the way until the closing song of Dead and Bloated.
Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz couldn't have been tighter. They played in perfect harmony and drove the STP songs and set from start to finish. Scott pranced around on stage like Scott always does and Dean is Dean. The entire band seemed to enjoy being together again and playing in front of 20k again.
I will shamefully admit that I enjoyed Velvet Revolver playing Sex Type Thing than Stone Temple Pilots playing Sex Type Thing. It might have something to do with Slash playing it, plus the added rhythm guitar on the track. Afterall, STP is a three piece band with Scott on vocals. But don't get me wrong, STP still sounded great and you should see the band, should you get the chance.
Setlist:
Big Empty
Wicked Garden
Big Bang Baby
Vasoline
Lady Picture Show
Lounge Fly
Crackerman
Sour Girl
Creep
Plush
Interstate Love Song
Coma
Down
All in the Suit That You Wear
Sex Type Thing
Trippin' On a Hole in a Paper Heart
Encore:
Dead and Bloated
I couldn't smuggle a camera into the show so I have to direct you to www.wmmr.com where you will find video and photos. If you don't, blame them for being lazy.

Stone Temple Pilots will release their new studio album next spring. I am excited for any new music I can get from Scott Weiland or Stone Temple Pilots. 2001's Shangra-La Dee Da was a disappointment compared to other STP albums. Weiland spoke to Spinner.com about the new record: "When we get back [from tour], we're going to finish the album," singer Scott Weiland told Spinner. "Then, when we finish the album, there will be a big tour around its release and that will probably be a long tour."Weiland is never one to do ... -

WMMR is a local rock station who have decided to put on a summer rock festival. It is similar to KROQ in Los Angeles, but with whatever schlop is on their station. Generally they do a good job putting on a festival of young bands, old bands, and popular bands. Last year they had ZZ Top and The Offspring, the year before Stone Temple Pilots. Well this year it is GRUNGEFEST. You thought grunge died with Kurt Cobain, you were WRONG. Headlining the festival is Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots. Then Post-grunge band Three Days Grace and Three ...
