New Mötley Crüe Song - The Saints of Los Angeles (download here)

I was awake at a ridiculously early time this morning to deal with a car battery that decided to stop working. While listening to a local radio station, the DJ announced that he was about to play the new Mötley Crüe single. After working myself back down to flaccidity, I was able to mentally prepare myself to get skull-fucked by one of the best bands of the 80's. This is a band, mind you, that members of Bn'R have dressed up as for Halloween no less than twice, and have tried to emulate (and failed more miserably than you can possibly imagine) for years. The question remained, were we going to be treated to decadence and cheesiness in the style of Theatre of Pain and Dr. Feelgood, or would we have to sit through another New Tattoo?
There are always two concerns with Mötley Crüe. First, how will Mick Mars perform? He is suffering from a debilitating disease, but his guitar playing seems to be top notch. I'm guessing that Nikki Sixx is writing a lot of the riffs. The other main concern is how Vince Neil will sound. His voice is one of the main reasons that their music was so popular in the 80's. Vince has since lost his youthful exuberance. My first question was answered after the initial bass intro, right as a Mick Mars was able to cram Wah-Wah, Whammy, and a Divebomb into the first 12 seconds of the guitar riff. We were on the right track. But how would Vince sound? Luckily for all of us die-hard
Crüe fans, it seems that Vince has traded in his Collagen, Botox, and Chowder, for tight pants and a vocal processor once again. He actually sounded like he could have recorded this before he ballooned up like Kirstie Alley.
The song was cool. I can't say it was the best song by the band that I've ever heard, but who would expect that? Was it better than anything else they've put out recently as a foursome? Yes. Tommy Lee is a solid drummer and Nikki Sixx is easily the heart and soul of the band. For Nikki, this album doesn't have to be a success. He has achieved great success with Sixx A.M. It is so refreshing to hear a band from the 80's go back to basics. If Metallica is able to pull this off later on this year, 2008 might actually be a positive year for Rock and Roll. Below, for your listening pleasure is the new Mötley Crüe single, "The Saints of Los Angeles".
