Airbourne and the Placebo Effect

PhotobucketI've got a bone to pick with a few people  and Elmer NJ. Last month, the BnR staff took and ill-advised and hastily assembled road trip to Atlantic City. Left to the mercy of local radio, we decided to call WMMR to request a song before we were subjected to the Nickelback-esque commercial swill they and WYSP play on infinite loop. We were driving through South Jersey at night, and only one song would keep the backwoods creeps at bay: Motorhead's "Killed by Death." Pathetically, WMMR, the bastion or rock in Philly, could not indulge our request. Their stick-in-the-ass program director would only let them play "Ace of Spades," and we weren't about to let that happen. As a consolation prize, the late night DJ said that they would be playing Airbourne next. "Who the fuck are Airbourne...?" I asked. The DJ assured me that I would not be disappointed because, "they sound just like AC/DC."

She wasn't kidding, Airbourne sounded like every cheap AC/DC cliché rolled up into one tidy 3 minute package. At least they weren't a cover band, but they were about one cunt hair away from tribute band status. Ah, the artistic sacrifices one has to make to get some radio airplay. Now don't get me wrong, their single, "Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast" is a catchy song, but I'm sure these lads could come up with a more original sound. There's a line between giving a nod to your influences and shamelessly ripping off your heroes. Only one album should sound like every other AC/DC album and that's the next AC/DC album. In the meantime, have fun listening to the radio in this pile o' shit market place. Don't expect to hear anything new or risky since these gutless, spineless, dickless program directors are only comfortable playing the same trite Nickelback shit and Airbourne. God forbid if we break any new ground. FM is the new AM, war is peace and punk is disco. I urge you to listen to those mp3 players instead.

Can you tell the difference between AC/DC and Brand X?

Perhaps it is not WMMR's fault. How much good music is really out there now? How much of it is as inspiring as Rocks by Aerosmith or Cheap Trick's Dream Police? I'll be nothing innovative or new will come out in these corporately owned times.
