Philadelphia Radio Airwaves Heat Up

In the 80's Philadelphia Rock Radio was overcrowded with the emerging newcomer WYSP (94.1) and resident rock vetern WMMR (93.3).The two stations fought hard for premium coverage of concerts, exclusive interviews, and bridge graffetti. WYSP eventually bested WMMR in the 90's, crowding out most of the market share. That was until Clear Channel decided to migrate to an all talk format helmed by Howard Stern and Opie & Anthony.

Philadelphia has always been a rock town. We want our rock loud, obxious, and in-your-face. We are passionate people. We are loyal to our favorite teams and this extends to our radio stations. WMMR and WYSP gangs fought in the streets over whose station was better WYSP or WMMR. Women were raped, men were killed, and Jesus H Christ switched loyalty to WMMR.

As goes Christ, so does his people and more people abondonned WYSP and their all talk format. It wasn't much they could do. They had douche talking heads who were forced to do their job and like it by an overbearing corporate overlord (Clear Channel). WMMR benefited from small time ownership and a 40 year committment to rock n roll. Now WMMR is number one and WYSP is looking to cut out a piece of that pie. So is the old war heating up again?

According to
Philly Gossip Queen, Dan Gross, the answer is yes.

"93.3 WMMR's Matt Cord allegedly threatened to kick the ass of a 94 WYSP listener who name dropped 'YSP's Monkey Boy and said "Preston and Steve suck" during a live 'MMR broadcast from last night's Foo Fighters show at the Wachovia Spectrum. A caller to 'YSP's Kidd Chris show this morning said he had gotten into it with the bald Cord, whom he compared to REM's Michael Stipe, and a "cancer patient." Cord, also a Sixers in-arena host, was broadcasting with Pierre Robert at the time of the alleged confrontation with the caller, named JP.

Cord did not immediately return a request for comment about the alleged shouting match, which was said to have been quickly broken up by Spectrum security."

I guess the desire to fight over a radio station is a bit much for me. You have to deal with hecklers all the time in the buisness. So why didn't Matt Cord just shrug the whole thing off as a boisterous, mouth breather trying to screw up a live broadcast? I guess we will have to wait and hear from Matt Cord. But I am assuming this is going to get worse before it gets better.
