A musical review of Hank III from the November 14th Philadelphia show

On Wednesday, November 14th, 2007, the staff of Blogs N' Roses was a part of history.  We witnessed one of the scariest, smelliest, and possibly most racist concerts ever.  The funny thing is, that had almost nothing to do with the music.  Joe Wettner will be covering the crowd, so it is my job to tell you all about Hank III.  Mr. III is of course the grandson of the late, great Hank Williams, and the son of Hank Williams Jr. (go figure)

The genre could be either classified as country, punkabilly, cowpunk, or simply black metal.  As with any "Jekyll and Hyde" performance, the tone changed with almost no warning.  The first half of the set was a traditional country vibe, dealing with many of today's hot social issues such as weed, Hank Williams being fired from the Grand Ole Opry, dicks, pills, weed, wine, weed, whiskey and weed.  One common observation made by most of the Bn'R staff dealt with bass player JoeBuck.  He resembled the progeny of Billy Bob Thornton from Sling Blade, and Phil Anselmo.  The fiddler looked like he popped two Viagra right before taking the stage, the lap steel player didn't look up once, and the drummer barely had a pulse for the first set.  The high point of the set was a rendition of GG Allin's classic, "Drink, Fight and Fuck".  All things considered, it was a nice, relaxing show.

The second set caught us by surprise the same way the movie "From Dusk Til Dawn" does, right after the vampires turn.  Out of nowhere we were hit by a Texas Metal onslaught, complete with obligatory metal screamer, metal fiddler, and songs about spilling the blood of poultry.  I believe there was one song that Joe Wettner enjoyed, but for the most part, it was not something that we found palpable.

Craig Wettner thought that JoeBuck may have been the brother of G.G. Allin, but a little Wikipedia searching found that he was in fact, not.  I can't remember much more of the show, as I was suffering from the flu.  If you get a chance to catch them, it is definitely unique.  Feel free to check them out on the web.
