Rick Astley - King of Medicore
In the 80's there were few that could bring the cheesy, watered-down pop songs to the masses. In 1987, Fondue Magazine found their hero in an unlikely character from England, Rick Astley. (Rick is white by the way, not black as his voice may suggest.)
Rick scored his first number one hit "Never Gonna Give You Up." It stayed on the Billboard Top 100 chart in the U.S.A. for almost one year.
Rick penetrated the charts again with his song "Together Forever" which was released on June 18, 1988. The single went on to the number one chart in the U.K and the U.S. You will notice it sounds very similar to his "Never Gonna Give You Up" hit.
Rick has become an internet phenomena thanks to a procedure called "Rickrolling."
That is when a well known news website claims to have breaking news and a link to the story. However, the link will go directly to "Never Gonna Give You Up." For instance, President Bush has sent 100,000 troops to Iran. Dude, I so RickRolled you.
Rick has also received increased popularity from his appearance on Family Guy. In a parody of "Back To the Future" Peter has to alter the past so that he ends up marrying Lois. Here is the clip:
