Young Dubliners show at the World Cafe Live
On August 15, 2007, The Young Dubliners came into Philadelphia and played the lovely World Cafe Live (WCL). Having never been to the WCL, I was shocked at the intimacy. If firehalls had excellent acoustics and a balcony, that would describe this place. It was so small that it almost felt like The Young Dubliners were putting on a private show just for us in my living room.
The opening band was Patrick's Head, a three piece band. They had an eight song set which started with lead singer John Byrne singing Raglan Road acapello. It takes guts to do that, and he had a great voice. The band was a solid three piece, two guitars and a tamborine to keep the beat. They had pretty good three part harmony. The band is based in Philly and if you get a chance, check them out.
The Young Dubliners performed from 9:30-11:00 straight. There were no breaks. They played a total of 20 songs. We were hoping to hear songs from the new album "With All Due Respect" and we were not disappointed. They did a great job of blending the old with the new. (Set list below). They had a tremendous amount of energy on stage, so much so that lead singer and rhythm guitarist Keith Roberts could not keep his guitar strapped.
The crowd was mixed in age some college kids, some older adults, but no matter the age the people had a great time. The music even prompted some older ladies to try their hand at Irish dancing. NOT RECOMMENDED!
Eric Rigler joins the band. He has set his own band (Bad Haggis) on hold while touring with the Young Dubliners. You have heard of Eric's work as he is a session pipist on such blockbusters as Titantic and Braveheart. And he truely is amazing. The sounds he was getting out of the pipes he was using were extraordinary.
I highly recommend seeing the band live because you are in for a great show. And you can't complain about the 15.00 ticket charge either. (Police tickets - 225.00; U2 - 180.00; Rolling Stones - 450.00)
