The Village People are not Gay
This is a tough article to write because there have been 16 Village People. The original ones are:
Alex Briley - The Seamen a.k.a. The Sailor
David Hodo - Construction Worker
Felipe Rose - Indian
Glenn Hughes - Biker (NOT the Deep Purple Glenn Hughes)
Randy Jones - Cowboy
Victor Willis - Policeman (wrote most of the famous hits)
Alex Briley, David Hodo, and Felipe Rose are still in the band and currently holding down their stereotypes. Ray Simpson was added the cop when Victor Willis left. Eric Anzalone was added as the biker when Glenn Hughes died of lung cancer. Jeff Olson is the new brokeback Cowboy.
Ok you have all that? Good! Now the new frontman Ray Simpson is playing down the group's gay past. The Village People are launching a comeback tour and he doesn't want them to play "camp clubs." Simpson is "frustrated that the band is given credit for being nothing more than gay icons."
Simpson said: "[The current lineup is] straight, gay, Catholic, Protestant...It's black, white, Indian, it's a very diverse group. Thank goodness that we're embraced by a lot of different people and a lot of different groups. The only way that you can actually exist...is by having mutual respect for each other and respecting the differences."
If it were me, I wouldn't try to disassociate myself from the gay and lesbian cultures. It is fact that they are a bit free-er with their money and might be willing to pay the ticket price. Hell, if I was in the Village People, I would ensure the first drink at the concert was on the band and hand out free condoms. My Village People concert would be an all out Gayapalooza. My maid of honor would be Axl Rose.
