There is an interesting trend abound. Last week Velvet Revolver released their album, but before doing so they streamed it online for about two weeks. Their first week of sales were nearly half of previous record at only 100k.

This week sees the release of another record that also was streamed online for about a week prior to the release. My question is: does the streaming of the album before release actually ruin your album sales? We shall make a blanket, overly generalized statement after hearing about the Smashing Pumpkins first week sales.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist

Interpol - Our Love to Admire

Metallica - Live at Live Earth (video of them performing at Live Earth)

Various Artists - Hairspray the Musical

Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Against Me! - New Wave

Trashlight Vision - Alibis and Ammunition

Don't forget to consider the fact that the Velvet Revolver album was only OK and not nearly as good as their first album. If 100,000 people did what I did (listened to the album and didn't like it enough to buy it), then that explains the dip in sales. I predict the same for Smashing Pumpkins, though I don't know what numbers you can use for comparison.

I agree, streaming the album helps me decide which select songs to illegally download, besides Slash has enough free guitars and Scotty W. doesn't need more disposable heroin income.

We will use any numbers that promote our current idea. Think of us as the Michael Moore of music.
